Source: Displaybank - Samsung Electronics, Next generation BLU is white OLED - Plan to Invest 50 Billion won for production equipment development Samsung Electronics on 7th of May established a detailed strategy for development and mass production of amorphous silicon(a-Si) based white OLED for next generation LCD BLU by utilizing its existing Gen.5 (1100x1300mm) TFT LCD production line in Cheonan. The company will invest a total of 50 billion won for developing a special company for white OLED deposition and encapsulation equipment and complete making production equipment by the end of next year with the aim of mass production start in 2008. An official at the company stated, "The use of white OLED as BLU is to secure high efficiency and superior color gamut when compared to flat fluorescent lamps and LED. We expect it will greatly contribute to simplification of parts, manufacturing process, and cost saving by eliminating the need for prism sheets."
