We've never really been into special features on discs, but what if the special features weren't actually on the disc, but were on the Internet? Like it or not, BD Live looks like it's coming in full force very soon. It could be cool, or it could just be a lot of hype.

Like it or not, BD-Live is coming

What is BD Live?
The BD Live functionality is the Internet connected part of the Blu-ray profile 2.0, which, in addition to an Internet connection, also requires a player to include two secondary decoders and 1 GB of local storage for updates and content. BD Live allows a disc to connect to the Internet to provide all sorts of interactive behavior from movie previews to multi-player games.

Some discs with BD Live functionality
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
The Sixth Day
The Other Boleyn Girl
Sleeping Beauty
Alien vs. Predator

We're hearing about Profile 2.0 players coming to market, but haven't seen any yet.  For right now the PS3 is still the best option.

There's a great article at Movieman's Guide to the Movies about BD Live and specifically the features on Disney's new Sleeping Beauty disc.  He covers all the features, including the infamous 'Chat' feature, but one he really liked was the 'Movie Rewards' feature:
"Now this is a great feature that will have everyone going nuts for. During Sleeping Beauty you will get the opportunity to play games to win points. You get points for either answering trivia questions or playing those Blu-ray Java games that are getting more and more popular on discs. You take those points and can cash them in via the BD-Live function on the disc to unlock exclusive interviews, trailers, wallpapers, ring tones etc. Now, the great thing is that you can combine points from several different films if you really want something that has a high exchange value. This is an amazing feature that is sure to bring people back to the disc over and over again. Kudos, Disney!"

Profile 2.0 features are starting to hit the market, but they don't have a significant WOW factor yet. What would give it that WOW factor?
