 | NEWS: ViewSonic launches Blu-ray home theatre PC (Pocket-lint, 7/23/2009 4:39pm) |
pc mini VOT550 looks awfully familiar
The last of a slew of ViewSonic launches is the pc mini VOT550, although, again as with the previous two mini computers, this one comes in two different models with its more basic sibling going under the name of VOT530.
The VOT550 comes with Windows Media Centre and is intended as a home entertainment or home theatre PC and as such, ViewSonic has equipped the top of the line model with a Blu-ray drive. We're not sure how big of a selling point this is, especially as this is a rebadged system from AOpen that we've seen sold under several other brand names in the past.
In terms of features, the VOT550 has a mobile Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, eSATA and a DVI port. A dongle is supplied that turns the DVI port into an HDMI port which allows for easy connectivity to your HD TV.
The VOT530 shuns the Blu-ray drive in favour for a DVD super-multi drive and both models feature slot-in type drive, similar to those in a car CD player. Price wise the VOT530 is going to set you back £494, while the Blu-ray equipped VOT550 ups the price to £678, making both fairly poor value for money compared to the other mini PCs that ViewSonic has just launched.

 | 2 new Best Buy Insignia Blu-ray players get Netflix streaming (Consumer Reports, 10/22/2009 6:59pm) |
| The ability to stream instant movies from a Blu-ray player, once relegated to higher-end models, is moving to the masses with two new Insignia-brand Netflix enabled Blu-ray players from Best Buy. The two models with Netflix access are the Insignia NS-WBRDVD player, sale priced at $200, and the $180 NS-BRDVD3. Both are currently available at stores and on BestBuy.com. The key differentiating feature is that the higher-priced model has built-in Wi-Fi, so you can wirelessly access a home network to connect to the Internet. In addition, the step-up model can decode both Dolby TrueHD [PDF] and DTS-HD Master Audio internally; the entry-level model only decodes Dolby TrueHD internally, though each can output both formats as bitstream if you have an A/V receiver that can decode them. —James K. | Sony TRIMASTER quad-HD LCD multiplies the resolution, and the price, of any home HDTV (Engadget, 10/06/2009 6:03pm) |
Can't wait until December for Toshiba's CELL REGZA LCD? Sony is bringing its own 56-inch 3,840x2160 quad-HD display to market November 1 in Japan. Priced at 6,825,000 ($76,583) including taxes this is clearly for pros only, hence the TRIMASTER name referring to the three elements combined within -- exact color, accurate picture and reliability -- thanks to a RGB LED backlit panel built with incredible picture reproduction and exact calibration (with included software via a connected PC) in mind. While it's cheaper than JVC's $175k 4K projector, unless you're mastering the next Pixar flick, viewing high res satellite imagery or can't live without four HD feeds on one screen even the most well heeled amongst may be better served scouring bargain bins for a used Westinghouse D56QX1 for now.

Though they've been floating around retail channels for a few weeks, Best Buy and Netflix have finally made official a partnership bringing streaming to the latest Insignia Blu-ray players. The NS-BRDVD3 runs $179, while the NS-WBRDVD edition tosses in WiFi for $20 more, while they won't stream out of the box, a firmware update just made available should add all the . These two keep the (we'll be nice and call it plain) styling of earlier models, and likely live up to the family reputation of "basic Blu-ray playback at a bargain" reported on the second generation of players. Of course, the BD-P1600 offers more features and a nicer reputation at about the same price, but Reward Zone members may want to think twice, with AVS Forum posters mentioning the NS-BRDVD3 can be had for just $99.99 through the 24th. | New Ratings: Blu-ray players now on CRO (Consumer Reports, 8/05/2009 3:30pm) |
| We’ve just posted our latest high-def Blu-ray Ratings (available to subscribers), and we’re happy to report that almost all the models tested can provide excellent HD and DVD picture quality. In fact, all the models in our Ratings offered excellent high-definition performance, though we did see some differences in how well players handled upconverted film-based programs from standard DVDs. In addition to models from familiar brands, such as LG, Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony (whose products we’ve previously reviewed), our latest Ratings include the first Blu-ray players from JVC, Sherwood, and Oppo (pictured), a smaller company whose upconverting DVD players earned strong word-of-mouth among the A/V enthusiast community. Check our Ratings to see how well these newcomers did compared to second- and third-generation models from other brands. With satisfying HD picture quality now almost a given, it’s primarily features that differentiate one player from another. For example, while almost all the new models in our Ratings are BD-Live (or BD-Live-ready) players—meaning they can connect to the Internet to access extra content, such as outtakes, additional directors', or actors' commentaries, or even video games, from a movie studio’s servers—some older models lack this feature. All the players in our test have BonusView, a picture-in-picture feature that lets you view additional content in a smaller window while the movie is playing. We’re also seeing more Internet-connected players that can now directly access instantly streaming movies from services such as Netflix or Amazon Video on Demand, or music from streaming Internet radio services such as Pandora. Some models offer wireless access to a home network so you don’t need to have a wired Ethernet jack near the player. Although we have seen Blu-ray prices fall since our last test, the addition of these new features has tempered the types of price drops we initially envisioned. As a result, you can still expect to pay $350 to $500 for a top-rated, BD-Live model from a major brand. A less expensive option is to choose a “BD-Live-ready†model; prices typically start at about $250. These players come with an Ethernet connection, but require you to purchase additional memory (typically a 1GB USB flash drive, which costs $10 to $15) to activate the BD-Live feature. But if you can live without BD-Live, you can save money by choosing one of the BonusView-only players, which typically sell for $200 or less. But we do anticipate prices dropping this fall, even on full-featured models from major brands, as manufacturing efficiencies come into play and brands compete for market share. We’ll be tracking Blu-ray prices over the next several months, especially during November’s Black Friday shopping period, when rumors suggest we’ll see the first $100 model. So keep checking back here for updates. Also, we recently changed our Blu-ray testing protocol, adding scores for Blu-ray disc load times and remote control operations. With so many players offering excellent picture quality, we’ll continue to adapt our Ratings to include new features or attributes that will help buyers differentiate among the choices.—James... | New Blu-ray player Ratings: Lower prices, more features (Consumer Reports, 10/09/2009 4:03pm) |
| In our largest test of Blu-ray players so far, we found that satisfying picture quality has become almost a given, while features and price vary considerably. You can pay as little as $160 for a recommended model or as much as $500, depending on the capabilities, bells and whistles you’re willing to pay for. Portability commands top dollar. The first portable Blu-ray player we’ve tested, the Panasonic DMP-B15, is priced at $700. Our latest Blu-ray player Ratings (available to subscribers) include 27 models that have a few features in common. All have BonusView, a picture-in-picture feature that lets you view additional content in a smaller window while a movie is playing, and all can upconvert standard DVDs to quasi-HD resolutions. Only a handful of the players, mostly priced at $300 and up, have BD-Live, a feature that allows the player to access directors’ commentaries, deleted scenes, games, and more from the movie studio’s servers. Other models are BD-Live-ready. These players, all priced at $200 and up, have the required Ethernet connection, but need additional memory (typically a 1GB USB flash drive, which costs $10 to $15) for the BD-Live feature to work. Another feature showing up on some of the higher-priced models is the ability to stream movies from online services such as Netflix and Amazon Video On Demand, or receive music streams from Internet radio stations such as Pandora. And more players now have USB ports or SD card slots, so you can play digital photos, music and even videos on your TV. One model, a Panasonic, has a built-in VHS player, a space-saving option for those who still watch tapes. Again, you’re not likely to find these features on the lowest-priced players. We expect prices to drop over the next several months, especially during November’s Black Friday shopping period. Rumors suggest we’ll see the first $100 model. So keep checking back here for updates. —James K. Willcox (Read Full Article) |

 | Netflix CEO Hastings speaks about YouTube, iPhone, Xbox 360 (AfterDawn, 9/23/2009 4:09am) |
During an interview with Reuters, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings spoke out about the future of the physical DVD, as well as Netflix's plans for the iPhone, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and possible competition from YouTube
The interview in its entirety:
Reuters: What will Netflix subscribers gain from the improvements in the recommendation system?
Hastings: ItÂ’s doubling the quality of our movie recommendation and that helps our subscribers get more enjoyment from movies. Because more often they love the movie they watch. More often the movies recommended will will turn out to be movies that you love. If you watch a couple of movies and donÂ’t like many, you start to watch (sports and other programming). If every movie is incredible, you start to watch more.
Reuters: Netflix video streams on MicrosoftÂ’s Xbox Live system. What about the PS3 and Wii?
Hastings: Eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs. So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts. Currently our Xbox deal is exclusive and we havenÂ’t characterized it more than that.
Reuters: Any plans to work in partnership with Apple and the iPhone?
Hastings: itÂ’s something thatÂ’s likely to come over time. But nothing in the short term. (With) movie watching, we are not focused on mobile yet, but (instead) on the TV, on Blu-ray and on the video game consoles. We will get to mobile eventually, including the iPhone.
Reuters: What of YoutubeÂ’s potential movie service?
Hastings: I think there will be a lot of competition in this market: Hulu, Apple, Amazon, Youtube, Blockbuster. Internet video is a huge opportunity. And there will be a lot of people engaged, and that is going to be great for the consumer. All of us are going to innovate and compete with each other and provide more and more value to the consumer.
Reuters: How far along are we on the transition to all digital video watching?
Hastings: There will be people doing DVD-by-mail in 15 or 20 years, so I think DVD will last a long time. Our best guess is that DVD will peak for us in 5 or so years. But it is continuing to grow. And the streaming is exploding. So we are getting nice growth in the DVD side and huge growth on the streaming side.
Reuters: What do you make of BlockbusterÂ’s store closing plan?
Hastings: Blockbuster and Redbox really compete on doing the inexpensive new releases, and we are much more the streaming and the catalog. Their closings donÂ’t really benefit us. It will benefit Redbox more than it does us.
Reuters: Have you been approached about an acquisition or partnership?
Hastings: We donÂ’t comment and any acquisition prospects.Permalink | Comments

 | VUDU comes to LG broadband HDTVs (AfterDawn, 9/02/2009 2:23pm) |
Owners of LG HDTVs with NetCast Entertainment Access now have access to another source of online video. LG announced an automatic update which adds the Vudu video rental (and purchase) service to LCD models .42LH50, 47LH50 and 55LH50 and plasma models 50PS80 and 60PS80.
If you have one of these TVs (and it is connected to the internet) you should see a VUDU option in the Netcast Interface. LG broadband HDTVs were announced at this year's CES and began selling in June with support for Netflix's Watch Instantly streaming video service already available.
Unlike Netflix, which packages streaming video with online DVD rentals, VUDU uses a pay as you go model. They also give you access to more new movies on the same day they are released on DVD and give you the option to purchase them.Permalink | Comments

And Vudu has redesigned its movie page to deliver the extra content more interactively. Check out this Dell Inspiron Zino HD, a tiny PC destined for your home theater. Shipping this Fall, there's scarce information about this hotshot, but the company says there are desktop parts inside, unlike the favorably reviewed Studio Hybrid that's so small it uses laptop parts to save space.
Why is Dell talking about "desktop parts" when the Intel Atom processor and NVIDIA Ion graphics processor have proven to us to be such a highly capable duo in the home theater? Perhaps you'll be able to opt for either desktop chips or the smaller Atom/Ion processors that are usually deployed in netbooks.
Dell is being coy about pricing and the exact release date of this home theater powerhouse. With an Ethernet port for internet access for BD-Live and firmware updates, there's full support of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
Offering Divx playback as well as AVCHD playback from DVDs and SD cards, as you'd expect, the new machine plays nice with Denon's A/V product line.
Denon's idea of price-conscious may not be the same as most, however, the DBP-160 will go on sale next month for a penny under ?400.

 | NEWS: Sony announces Wi-Fi Blu-ray players (Pocket-lint, 9/02/2009 3:57pm) |
IFA 2009: BDP-S560 and BDP-S760 announced
At its IFA press conference, Sony has announced two new Blu-Ray players that come with Wi-Fi functionality. That'll mean that you won't have to fiddle with plugging an ethernet cable into the back of the units.
The BDP-S560 and BDP-S760 have wireless-n standard connectivity, and are also WPS-enabled for ease of connection. Firmware updates and BD-Live capabilities can then be accessed without having to deal with cables.
Both Blu-ray players are also DLNA certified, meaning that you'll be able to use Windows functionality to send pictures and video to the players from your laptop. They have upscaling for DVDs and have a 6-second quickstart feature that the company claims is "unrivalled by other products available today".
The BDP-S760 is the flagship model and in addition to the above functionality contains an "HD Reality Enhancer". That should smooth image tones and reduce noise to create more a realistic picture, if the company is to believed. The BDP-S760 also includes multi-channel headphone surround for generating a 7.1 experience on stereo earphones.
No pricing or availability was provided.

 | Denon Announces Less Expensive Flagship Blu-ray Disc Player (About.com, 9/26/2009 8:00am) |
|
Although Denon introduced their flagship $4,500 DVD-A1UDCI Blu-ray Disc player just this past January at CES, they have just announced a new "flagship quality" Blu-ray Disc player for less than half the price (which is still $1,999).
Just as with the DVD-A1UDC1, the new DBP-4010UDCI meets Profile 2.0 specifications with the required Ethernet port as well as a slot for memory expansion and audio, video, still image file playback via SD card. This player is also playback compatible with Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, CDs, but DVD-Audio Discs and SACDs. Also, another welcome feature for audiophiles has a separate 2 channel/7.1 channel analog audio outputs and bass management control, and, for videophiles, the DBP-4010UDCI offers vertical stretch, so that films with 2:35 aspect ratio images can be properly displayed when using projectors with 2:35 aspect ratio lens attachments.
However, one important change from the previous DVD-A1UDCI is the switch from using the the Silicon Optix Realta Chip for DVD upscaling, to the use of the Anchor Bay VRS ABT-2010 Chip for that purpose.
Also, for custom installers, the DBP-4010UDCI is fully equipped with both RS-232 and Wired remote in/out connectors.
For complete details, check out the Official Denon Announcement, along with the DBP-4010UDCI Specification Sheet and User Manual. Photos (c) Denon USA - Click on photos for larger view. (Read Full Article) |
 | In the CR Test Labs: New LCD, plasma HDTVs (Consumer Reports, 8/04/2009 2:55pm) |
| The latest batch of televisions in the CR TV lab includes the new 46-inch Sony Bravia LCD. While many of us are gearing up for summer vacations, CR’s TV engineers are still hard at work testing more LCD and plasma TVs. Among this latest group are models with full-array LED backlights, and several 240Hz sets that take aim at reducing motion blur. We’re also looking at some new Toshiba models that will be the first to include Dolby Volume, a volume-leveling technology that attempts to minimize differences in loudness when you switch channels or when commercials come on. Here are the models currently being tested in our TV labs: LCD TVs Hitachi L26D103: This 26-inch 720p (1366x768) set is a TV/DVD combo with an integrated standard DVD player, headphone jack, and a built-in sleep timer. Hitachi L32A403: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set from Hitachi has four HDMI inputs, and comes with a swivel stand. JVC LT-46J300: This 46-inch 1080p LCD from JVC has the company’s TeleDock integrated iPod dock. LG 55LH90: This 55-inch 1080p LCD TV from LG is a high-featured model that has full-array LED backlights with local dimming, and the company’s TruMotion 240Hz technology, which combines a 120Hz refresh rate with a scanning backlight. It’s also a THX-certified set. Oddly for a higher-priced set, it doesn’t include access to LG’s NetCast Internet service. Magnavox 42MF439B/F7: Earlier this year Philips handed over the manufacturing and marketing of its Philips- and Magnavox-brand TVs in the U.S. to Funai, which also controls the Sylvania brand. This Magnavox, among the first TVs we've seen as part of the deal, is a lower-priced 42-inch 1080p LCD model that can play back digital photos and music stored on a USB flash drive. Philips 32PFL3504D: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set, available at mass merchants, warehouse clubs, regional dealers, and online retailers, is fairly low-priced for a major brand and includes a set-up assistant that uses an onscreen wizard to personalize settings. RCA L46FHD37R: A lower-cost 46-inch 1080p LCD, sold at Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Clubs, and other retailers, that include a light sensor that automatically adjusts contrast to room light conditions. Samsung LN52B750: This 52-inch 1080p LCD from Samsung has new Touch of Color cosmetics (charcoal gray) and the company's Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology that actually quadruples the TV’s frame rate. It also includes the company’s [email protected] Internet service, which uses Yahoo widgets to access online content, which will soon include instant movies from Blockbuster. Also comes with some preloaded content, such as recipes and games. It can wirelessly connect to a home network via an optional USB wireless dongle. Sharp Aquos LC-52E77UN: This 52-inch 1080p LCD from Sharp features a new design, 120Hz technology and has five HDMI inputs, the most we’ve seen. Sharp Aquos LC-C4067UN: This value-priced Aquos is a 40-inch 1080p LCD sold via the warehouse clubs. Sony Bravia KDL-46Z5100: This pricey 46-inch Sony LCD has Sony’s Motionflow 240Hz technology, which actually quadruples the TVs frame rate, plus the Bravia’s widget-based... (Read Full Article) |

 | Sony's new BDP-N460 Blu-ray player adds access to internet content (Engadget, 9/09/2009 10:00pm) |
What you're looking at here is the latest addition to the Sony Blu-ray family. The BDP-N460 seemingly fits right in between the BDP-S360 and the BDP-S560 with an MSRP of $249. What sets it apart from its little brother is the fact that it can use its included network jack for more than just BD-Live and it features a USB port on the front, in addition to the one on the back for optional BD-Live storage. There's no built in WiFi or MKV support like other brands though, but it is shipping with access to YouTube and to Bravia Internet Video, and in addition Sony promises Netflix Watch Instantly later this fall. No word on whether this means the end for the BDP-S360, but considering the price and improved features of the 460, that's where we'd put our money.Continue reading Sony's new BDP-N460 Blu-ray player adds access to internet contentFiled under: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Blu-ray, SonySony's new BDP-N460 Blu-ray player adds access to internet content originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 17:00:00 EST. | Zune HD specs fill in the blanks on video format support, battery life and more (Engadget, 8/13/2009 8:28pm) |
Now that everything Zune HD is official and available for pre-order, Microsoft has seen fit to loose official specs, putting to rest -- at least until we can do a full hands on -- questions about what to expect from the OLED touchscreen packing device. From dimensions (52.7 mm x 102.1 mm x 8.9 mm, 2.6 oz) to battery life (24 hours for music with wireless off, up to 4 hours of video) and charge time (3 hours, 2 hours to 90%.) While the offical site (incorrectly) currently lists max video res at barely-better-than-DVD 720 x 480, we contacted Microsoft and received the official specs on video support, and if for some reason you needed to hear it again: the Tegra chip is a beast. Ready for HDTV playback when it's plugged into the AV dock, the Zune software supports up to 1280 x 720, 30 frames per second at a max 14 Mbps bitrate for WMV HD and h.264 sources. Confirmed still a bummer? No wireless video streaming from the Zune Video Marketplace, though the specs do indicate that purchases and rentals will work across all three screens, PC, Zune and Xbox 360. Check the corrected specs after the break, now all that's left is getting some alone time with one.Continue reading Zune HD specs fill in the blanks on video format support, battery life and moreFiled under: Handhelds, HDTV, Home EntertainmentZune HD specs fill in the blanks on video format support, battery life and more originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 13 Aug 2009 15:28:00 EST.
