pc mini VOT550 looks awfully familiar
The last of a slew of ViewSonic launches is the pc mini VOT550, although, again as with the previous two mini computers, this one comes in two different models with its more basic sibling going under the name of VOT530.
The VOT550 comes with Windows Media Centre and is intended as a home entertainment or home theatre PC and as such, ViewSonic has equipped the top of the line model with a Blu-ray drive. We're not sure how big of a selling point this is, especially as this is a rebadged system from AOpen that we've seen sold under several other brand names in the past.
In terms of features, the VOT550 has a mobile Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, eSATA and a DVI port. A dongle is supplied that turns the DVI port into an HDMI port which allows for easy connectivity to your HD TV.
The VOT530 shuns the Blu-ray drive in favour for a DVD super-multi drive and both models feature slot-in type drive, similar to those in a car CD player. Price wise the VOT530 is going to set you back £494, while the Blu-ray equipped VOT550 ups the price to £678, making both fairly poor value for money compared to the other mini PCs that ViewSonic has just launched.

Can't wait until December for Toshiba's CELL REGZA LCD? Sony is bringing its own 56-inch 3,840x2160 quad-HD display to market November 1 in Japan. Priced at 6,825,000 ($76,583) including taxes this is clearly for pros only, hence the TRIMASTER name referring to the three elements combined within -- exact color, accurate picture and reliability -- thanks to a RGB LED backlit panel built with incredible picture reproduction and exact calibration (with included software via a connected PC) in mind. While it's cheaper than JVC's $175k 4K projector, unless you're mastering the next Pixar flick, viewing high res satellite imagery or can't live without four HD feeds on one screen even the most well heeled amongst may be better served scouring bargain bins for a used Westinghouse D56QX1 for now.

Toshiba has announced the launch of the Qosmio X500 boasting a "sleek, glossy black chassis, backlit keyboard and LED-feathertouch controls".
Powered by Intel's latest Quad Core processors and the latest nVIDIA GeForce graphics, the Qosmio X500 claims to deliver "a realistic gameplay experience with intense visuals, vibrant environments and dynamic character effects".
With an 18.4-inch TruBrite Full HD LCD screen with 16:9 aspect ratio at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, Harman Kardon stereo speakers, a rewritable Blu-ray drive, the X500 appears, on paper at least, to be an entertainment powerhouse.
It also gets Toshiba's Resolution+ upscaling technology, that sees standard definition DVDs and video files upconverted to "near high definition" quality.
Other features include an "HD" webcam, a multi-touch touch pad, fingerprint reader, face recognition, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, eight touch-sensitive multimedia buttons, up to 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, three USB ports all of which offer "Sleep-and-Charge" tech, REGZA-Link HDMI-CEC and a 5-in-1 card reader.
The Qosmio X500 will be available in the UK from late October - no pricing revealed, but it's gonna be steep.

| The Samsung Instinct HD. [PHOTO courtesy of Samsung] The Samsung Instinct HD, available from Sprint for $250 with a two-year contract after a $100 mail-in rebate, is the first cell phone we've seen that claims to make high-definition video recordings. It also boasts a 5-megapixel still camera with flash. That camera is a step up from the flashless, 2-megapixel camera found on previous Instincts, also from Sprint, including the S30 version now in our Ratings, available to subscribers. We’re evaluating the Instinct HD now, and will post full test results on it to our Ratings later this month. Meantime, our initial results on its imaging are promising, albeit with a few quibbles. The new Instinct’s camera is easy to access, thanks to a dedicated camera button, conveniently located on the lower right side of the phone. Pushing the button activates the camera’s still mode. Tapping a camera icon on the upper left of the largish (1.78 x 2.66 in.) display switches the camera to video mode. Tapping again summons controls for auto-focus, exposure, and other camera functions. The Instinct HD claims it can record video resolution of 1280 x 720p, which is a true HD format—although, as we often point out, HD format alone does not assure images of pristine, high-definition quality. To assess quality, we shot a series of videos on the Instinct and hooked it up to a 50-inch Panasonic plasma television using the optional ($30) HDMI cable. Our findings: Color was good in the MPEG4 videos, though they lacked fine detail and texture. They blurred even more when we panned the camera to the left or right. In short, they couldn’t rival the image quality you’d enjoy from full-sized HD camcorders in our Ratings, available to subscribers. But such camcorders are much bigger and pricier than the Instinct HD, and do nothing except shoot video and stills. The high-def video quality of the Instinct was comparable to what you’d get from a standard-definition pocket camcorder, such as the Flip. And that's still way ahead of the video we've seen any other camera phone. A few details and quibbles: The HDMI cable has a proprietary connector that works only with the Samsung HD, so you may have trouble finding a replacement if it's lost while you're on vacation. You can't use the cable for showing stills on your TV. If your TV has an SD memory-card slot, you can play photos and videos off of the phone's 4GB microSD memory card (the phone comes with an SD memory card adaptor). Unfortunately, accessing the card is a pain. You have to open the phone's back cover and remove the battery, which shuts off the phone. And the still-image performance of the Instinct? Pictures were sharp and well-defined, with good color overall on the TV screen, though shots taken in low light still looked dark—even with the flash. Update to their popular model
Adding to the already popular D300 DSLR is the D300s, which brings HD movie capture to the party in a previous-anticipated move by Nikon.
With an effective 12.3-megapixels, the D300s offers 7fps continuous shooting (8 with battery pack) driven by the EXPEED image processor, and a 51-point focusing system.
The new video mode benefits from autofocus whilst shooting, but doesn't stretch to Full HD, instead offering a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720 at 24fps. Lower resolution options are also available.
Boosting the video option, you'll be able to attach an external mic thanks to a 3.5mm audio input. Video capture is sadly limited to 5 minutes in 720p, but can be extended to 20 minutes at lower resolutions.
Dual memory card slots have been added, giving you Compact Flash and Secure Digital, with flexible set-up options allowing you to shoot JPEGs to one and RAW to the other, or stills on one and video on the other.
Live View mode can be activated on the 3-inch 920k-dot display, whilst viewing your movies will be a breeze to view thanks to the on-board HDMI slot.
Available from 28 August, the Nikon D300s will set you back £1499.99, body only.

Coming straight out of a brand new 10G production facility in Sakai, Sharp's line of LX HDTVs (in 60-, 52-, 46- and 40-inch sizes) are all sporting the latest in LCD technology with UV²A panels and LED backlighting. Unfortunately, like Sony, these new screens abandon the higher quality RGB LED technology of the pricey XS1 series for cheaper white LEDs. Still, with a price of around $5,000 for a 52-inch compared to the $12,000 sticker shock of the XS1, it's easy to see why the switch was made. Other improvements include a light sensor for auto-calibration, a six speaker (5 speakers on the 40-inch) integrated 2.1 channel sound system with "Duo Bass" subwoofer and the usual assortment of VOD and AQUOS network support in store for Japanese buyers this November. While already available on a few U.S. models expect the new tech to spread across Sharp's U.S. lineup shortly, not to mention Sony and anyone other parties interested in a piece of the company's suddenly expanded manufacturing muscle.

Check out this Dell Inspiron Zino HD, a tiny PC destined for your home theater. Shipping this Fall, there's scarce information about this hotshot, but the company says there are desktop parts inside, unlike the favorably reviewed Studio Hybrid that's so small it uses laptop parts to save space.
Why is Dell talking about "desktop parts" when the Intel Atom processor and NVIDIA Ion graphics processor have proven to us to be such a highly capable duo in the home theater? In case you hadn't already learned your lesson and started checking behind the displays while HDTV shopping, the HD Guru points out another element of the in-store experience that throws off buyers (and likely contributes to the LCD vs. plasma choices we find so infuriating): lighting. In case you don't recall from your last trek to a big box superstore, the lighting is quite often stuck on blinding making it nearly impossible to discern any difference in picture quality between televisions, specifically in terms of contrast and black levels (the pictures above are of the same value priced display, at left, under normal home lighting, at right, how it looks under some store lighting setups.) Tested with an illuminance meter, all the stores (except Best Buy's Magnolia showrooms) averaged well above home ambient lighting levels, with Wal-Mart and Costco measuring the highest at 411.66 and 742.77 lux. | Football season is coming up, and we don't want to be caught short with a second-rate HDTV. Trusted HDGuru Gary Merson says the Panasonic TC-P54V10, a 54-inch plasma 1080p set, is "the new king of HDTVs." In his eyes-on review, he lauds the THX-anointed plasma panel's excellent image brightness, low energy consumption, deep black levels, judder-free film reproduction, and impressive "pop."
Judging from his impeccable credibility in the past, if the HDGuru says this $2300 HDTV as the world's best, it probably is. He even says this is comparable or better in nearly every criteria than the revered (and unfortunately, discontinued) Pioneer Kuro plasma HDTVs. We want. Our advice? Wait until next month for the release of Panasonic's 65-inch version of this new "King of HDTVs."

Just because Toshiba has given up on HD DVD and moved on, doesn't mean the format war is totally over for red. According to a report by a Japanese TV station, its successor, China Blue HD is actually leading Blu-ray in marketshare in that country. Of course, based on the article found by our friends at FormatWarCentral, all we have to go on is a machine translated description of a video in a language we don't speak describing the apparent initial success of the government backed format in a socialist republic. If you need more evidence than that to declare the format war officially restarted, you're probably a communist, but before we drag you in front of the Un-American activities committee check out the video for a peek at the slick new CBHD cases that The Onion will surely be shipping its videos in very soon.

| In our largest test of Blu-ray players so far, we found that satisfying picture quality has become almost a given, while features and price vary considerably. You can pay as little as $160 for a recommended model or as much as $500, depending on the capabilities, bells and whistles you’re willing to pay for. Portability commands top dollar. The first portable Blu-ray player we’ve tested, the Panasonic DMP-B15, is priced at $700. Our latest Blu-ray player Ratings (available to subscribers) include 27 models that have a few features in common. All have BonusView, a picture-in-picture feature that lets you view additional content in a smaller window while a movie is playing, and all can upconvert standard DVDs to quasi-HD resolutions. Only a handful of the players, mostly priced at $300 and up, have BD-Live, a feature that allows the player to access directors’ commentaries, deleted scenes, games, and more from the movie studio’s servers. Other models are BD-Live-ready. These players, all priced at $200 and up, have the required Ethernet connection, but need additional memory (typically a 1GB USB flash drive, which costs $10 to $15) for the BD-Live feature to work. Another feature showing up on some of the higher-priced models is the ability to stream movies from online services such as Netflix and Amazon Video On Demand, or receive music streams from Internet radio stations such as Pandora. And more players now have USB ports or SD card slots, so you can play digital photos, music and even videos on your TV. One model, a Panasonic, has a built-in VHS player, a space-saving option for those who still watch tapes. Again, you’re not likely to find these features on the lowest-priced players. Aside from the new JournE touch, the other main thrust at IFA's booth is Blu-ray -- at least, one would think. In reality, when we finally found the lone BDX2000, the LCD it was plugged into was off, while numerous DVD players and upscaling tech demos littered the surrounding booth area. Once we got a rep to turn it on for us, the Blu-ray player seemed to work just fine, as should be expected. The new Blu-ray equipped P500, however, wasn't so successful: our colleagues at Engadget Spanish watched an attempted Blu-ray showing on the laptop go awry, and by the time we'd dropped by the booth, any Blu-ray models of the P500 had been pulled from the show floor due to crashiness. In talking with a Toshiba rep, it's clear that the company hasn't abandoned its ideas of internet distribution and other alternatives to the once rival format of Blu-ray. The company is looking into a solution that uses a Blu-ray disc and BD Live to stream internet media to the player, and has packed in decent codec support for playing back media off of the BDX2000's SD card reader. We're sure Toshiba will figure out its P500 woes before the laptop ships to consumers, but there's no lack of interestingness in these first displays of Toshiba's "commitment" to the Blu-ray format. LG has announced that their LH90 model has become the first THX Display certified LCD HDTV.
According to HighDefDigest "the 240hz capable LH90 features LED backlighting with local dimming for precise picture control and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio ensuring a ridiculously good picture."
Says Peter Reiner, LG VP of marketing: “LG's advanced LED Backlight technology precisely controls the brightness of specific areas of the screen, providing crisper, clearer pictures while using less energy than traditional LCD models.”

New players with all the usual bells and whistles
Philips has announced two new Blu-ray players at IFA in Berlin as it continues to push ahead with the format that has trebled in popularity in the last year.
The new BDP7500 will be housed in an "real" aluminum (we not sure what fake aluminum is) and offer full HD 1080p at 24 fps for cinema-like images.
The players will also get DivX Ultra for enhanced playback of DivX media files, DVD video upscaling to 1080p via HDMI for near-HD images, and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA for HD 7.1 surround sound. BD-Live (Profile 2.0), and USB drive connectivity complete the package.
A rather niche technology also included is subtitle shift allowing you to change the location of the subtitles on screen.
The players themselves will come with touch sensitive controls and for the design conscious three different colours; blue, red and black.
No word on pricing, but expect the devices to hit the UK early next year.

| We’ve just posted our latest high-def Blu-ray Ratings (available to subscribers), and we’re happy to report that almost all the models tested can provide excellent HD and DVD picture quality. In fact, all the models in our Ratings offered excellent high-definition performance, though we did see some differences in how well players handled upconverted film-based programs from standard DVDs. In addition to models from familiar brands, such as LG, Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony (whose products we’ve previously reviewed), our latest Ratings include the first Blu-ray players from JVC, Sherwood, and Oppo (pictured), a smaller company whose upconverting DVD players earned strong word-of-mouth among the A/V enthusiast community. Check our Ratings to see how well these newcomers did compared to second- and third-generation models from other brands. With satisfying HD picture quality now almost a given, it’s primarily features that differentiate one player from another. For example, while almost all the new models in our Ratings are BD-Live (or BD-Live-ready) players—meaning they can connect to the Internet to access extra content, such as outtakes, additional directors', or actors' commentaries, or even video games, from a movie studio’s servers—some older models lack this feature. All the players in our test have BonusView, a picture-in-picture feature that lets you view additional content in a smaller window while the movie is playing. We’re also seeing more Internet-connected players that can now directly access instantly streaming movies from services such as Netflix or Amazon Video on Demand, or music from streaming Internet radio services such as Pandora. Some models offer wireless access to a home network so you don’t need to have a wired Ethernet jack near the player. Although we have seen Blu-ray prices fall since our last test, the addition of these new features has tempered the types of price drops we initially envisioned. As a result, you can still expect to pay $350 to $500 for a top-rated, BD-Live model from a major brand. A less expensive option is to choose a “BD-Live-ready†model; prices typically start at about $250. These players come with an Ethernet connection, but require you to purchase additional memory (typically a 1GB USB flash drive, which costs $10 to $15) to activate the BD-Live feature. But if you can live without BD-Live, you can save money by choosing one of the BonusView-only players, which typically sell for $200 or less. But we do anticipate prices dropping this fall, even on full-featured models from major brands, as manufacturing efficiencies come into play and brands compete for market share. In a column published today on Develop, Black Rock Studio (Pure, Split/Second) technical director David Jeffrries revealed that Microsoft has removed an item from its TCRs (Technical Certification Requirements) that stated all Xbox 360 games must run at a minimum of 1280x720 (720p) resolution if the system is in HD mode. According to Jeffries, this was done earlier this year so that developers could be "free to make the trade-off between resolution and image quality as we see fit."
TCRs are technical "rules" that all games developed for a given platform must adhere to in order to be certified for release. Of course, some games that have skirted this specific TCR have still been allowed on the system; the most notable being Microsoft's own Halo 3, which runs at 1152x640 (progressive).
Joystiq has confirmed with a trusted source familiar with Microsoft's TCRs that Jeffries' claim is legit. Not only that, but, as of March 2009, Xbox 360 developers are no longer required to utilize full-screen anti-aliasing in their games. The elimination of both requirements is especially noteworthy since the console maker had touted that all 360 games would run at a minimum of 720p with at least 2x FSAA since before the hardware launched.
As Jeffries points out in his column, 1280x720 isn't necessarily the "starting point" for HD on many displays and that it's not nearly as crucial as anti-aliasing. It's not clear if the back-tracking on Microsoft's part was due to pressure from the development community or not, but we can probably all agree that, as long as a game looks great, it doesn't really matter how its creators got there.
