We know, we're as shocked as you are! Sony has used the GamesCom stage in Cologne to announce the oh-so-tiny PS3 Slim. The good news is that the system sports both a slimmer form factor (33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter and 34 percent less power use) a 120GB hard drive and the tidy price tag of $299. It boasts all the same features as the current PS3, which means still no backwards compatibility with your PS2 games.
If you've been holding off on buying a chunkier PS3 until the inevitable release of its slimmer little brother, your wait will finally end in September.

| In our largest test of Blu-ray players so far, we found that satisfying picture quality has become almost a given, while features and price vary considerably. You can pay as little as $160 for a recommended model or as much as $500, depending on the capabilities, bells and whistles you’re willing to pay for. Portability commands top dollar. The first portable Blu-ray player we’ve tested, the Panasonic DMP-B15, is priced at $700. Our latest Blu-ray player Ratings (available to subscribers) include 27 models that have a few features in common. All have BonusView, a picture-in-picture feature that lets you view additional content in a smaller window while a movie is playing, and all can upconvert standard DVDs to quasi-HD resolutions. Only a handful of the players, mostly priced at $300 and up, have BD-Live, a feature that allows the player to access directors’ commentaries, deleted scenes, games, and more from the movie studio’s servers. Other models are BD-Live-ready. These players, all priced at $200 and up, have the required Ethernet connection, but need additional memory (typically a 1GB USB flash drive, which costs $10 to $15) for the BD-Live feature to work. Another feature showing up on some of the higher-priced models is the ability to stream movies from online services such as Netflix and Amazon Video On Demand, or receive music streams from Internet radio stations such as Pandora. And more players now have USB ports or SD card slots, so you can play digital photos, music and even videos on your TV. Sure it's summertime in New York and not January in Las Vegas, but that didn't stop LG from rolling out a couple new lines of LCD HDTVs today. The new SL80 and SL90 models don't bring new high water marks on the spec sheets, but feature LG's take on the "borderless" design trend that's the rage these days, built from a single edge to edge piece of glass with a slim bezel and Invisible Speaker design. The top of the line SL90 is due later this year for an unspecified price range in 42- and 47-inch sizes with LED backlighting contributing to its 3,000,000:1 claimed contrast ratio and 1.15 inch depth, plus 120Hz TruMotion processing. The SL80 line has 240Hz processing, but older CCFL backlighting means a 300,000:1 measured contrast ratio and 1.8-inch thick design, but the 42-, 47-, and 55-inch models will be available this August for $1,599, $1,899 and $2,799, respectively. Seagate has announced the launch of the new FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player, described as the "next generation home theatre solution designed to instantly and easily connect your digital media library to your home entertainment system".
The player has a docking system that offers a quick and easy way to connect Seagate external hard drives to televisions or home entertainment centres.
With what's said to be an easy to navigate interface and supplied remote control, movies, videos, music and images can then be viewed on a large-screen TV with support for 1080p HD video, DTS 2.0 + Digital Out, and Dolby Digital technology.
There's also two additional USB ports for connecting other USB storage devices and an Ethernet port for network connectivity.
The Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player is available now for $149.99 (?90 as a direct translation), with a wireless adapter due to be available in October as a separate accessory through Seagate.com for $69.99 (?42).
In addition, Seagate has also announced the FreeAgent DockStar network adapter, that will connect a FreeAgent Go portable hard drive to a network, giving access to its content from anywhere in or outside of the home (with the Pogoplug service), as well as allowing for file sharing.
"In a matter of minutes a drive can become accessible through any Internet connected computer, as well as through an innovative iPhone application", says Seagate.
The FreeAgent DockStar network adapter is available now for $99.99 (?60). The Pogoplug service for remote access and sharing, is free for a year, then $29.99 per year afterwards.

Complete with DirectX 11 capabilities
ATI has just released a new series of graphics cards - the Radeon HD 5700s. Two cards initially make up the range, there's the Radeon HD 5750 and the meatier Radeon HD 5770. Both come with DirectX 11 capabilities and a host of other features that PC tweakers might be interested in.
The company says that this Radeon release is "all about future-proofing your graphics card". It reckons that this generation of cards can cope on high settings with every game currently out and in the near future, too. Plenty of DirectX 11 games are due out before Christmas, including DiRT2, Stalker: Call of Pripyat, and Battleforge that already has a patch that converts it to DX 11.
DirectX 11 brings tessellation, shader model 5, Directcompute 11, HDR texture compression and better multi-threading performance. The cards also support HDMI 1.3, have stream technology support, and come with three outputs so you can play with three monitors at?3 x 2560 x 1600 in what ATI is calling an "Eyefinity" setup.
The 5770 has 1.36 teraFLOPs of computing power and low-ish power consumption of 108W under load and 18W when idle. It comes with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and will cost $159. There's no UK pricing yet.
The 5750, on the other hand has 1.008 teraFLOPs of computing power and will take up 86W of power under load and 16W when idle. That'll come with the option of 1GB or 512MB of memory, with the former costing $129 and the latter costing more like $110. We'd be surprised if UK prices were lower, even at a 1 to 1 conversion rate.
Still, they're not exceptionally high either, meaning that if you're considering an upgrade then it might be worth asking for one of these in your stocking this Christmas.

In fact, all the models in our Ratings offered excellent high-definition performance, though we did see some differences in how well players handled upconverted film-based programs from standard DVDs. Although we have seen Blu-ray prices fall since our last test, the addition of these new features has tempered the types of price drops we initially envisioned. As a result, you can still expect to pay $350 to $500 for a top-rated, BD-Live model from a major brand. A less expensive option is to choose a “BD-Live-ready†model; prices typically start at about $250. These players come with an Ethernet connection, but require you to purchase additional memory (typically a 1GB USB flash drive, which costs $10 to $15) to activate the BD-Live feature. But if you can live without BD-Live, you can save money by choosing one of the BonusView-only players, which typically sell for $200 or less. But we do anticipate prices dropping this fall, even on full-featured models from major brands, as manufacturing efficiencies come into play and brands compete for market share. We’ll be tracking Blu-ray prices over the next several months, especially during November’s Black Friday shopping period, when rumors suggest we’ll see the first $100 model. | This hot little number is an external Blu-Ray player for computers that Asus hopes to have on shelves later this month. What surprised us the most is the fact that the one and only connector you'll see along the sides of the unit is one for a USB attachment — no HDMI, no AC jack to plug this thing into the wall. It does everything via USB.
Hopefully Asus will give it a cooler name than "SBC-04D1S-U" by the time it launches. According to the company it can write DVD-Rs and CD-Rs in addition to reading Blu-Ray. It also has a "Turbo Engine for enhanced USB Connectivity" — which is vaguely responsible for cranking HD goodness to your screen — and comes with a vertical stand and Cyberlink software.

| Blu-ray Gets Big Boost From Sony, Best Buy, and Apple (About.com, 9/28/2009 10:00am) |
| For those that are still Blu-ray doubters, the trend is against you. Blu-ray has not only been on a continuous growth pattern despite the current lackluster economy, but may experience substantially increased growth as a result of four new developments.
First: The large number of Blu-ray Disc players introduced at the recent CEDIA EXPO from both mainstream and niche-brand manufacturers.
Second: Sony has revealed that its new Playstation 3 Slim (which has a built-in Blu-ray Disc player) has sold more than 1 million units since it was released on September 1st.
Third: Apple is finally jumping on the Blu-ray bandwagon with an announcement that it will be including a Blu-ray Disc drive in its upcoming series of iMacs.
Fourth: Best Buy has announced that it will be marketing a new line of its Insignia-brand LCD TVs that will include built-in Blu-ray Disc players; just in time for the 2009 Christmas and Winter Holiday Season.

Networked drive offers 1080p support
Western Digital has announced the launch of the WD TV Live HD media player, a revamp of a previous product this time round with networking capabilities as well as support for Full HD 1080p resolution.
WD says the new drive makes it easy to play HD videos stored on USB and network drives, from PCs and Macs, as well as stream content from websites on big screen HDTVs.
Boasting a "more responsive" interface than the previous WD TV HD media player, the Ethernet- and Wi-Fi-enabled new player comes complete with remote control, boasts internet radio, two USB ports, one HDMI port and SPDIF digital output.
The WD TV Live Media Player is available now on the high street, online, and at www.shopwd.co.uk for ?119.99.

New features inbound 1st September
Sony has confirmed that the PS3 and PS3 Slim will be getting a software update in the coming weeks bringing with it a host of new features including BBC iPlayer support.
Although the BBC's on demand service has been available in a workaround on the console, Sony has convinced the corporation to make things official.
It will be just one of a number of country specific content deals as the company continues to promote the console as more than just a games machine.
The BBC iPlayer will be available on the 1 September with RTVE, ANTENA 3 and La Sexta in Spain, ZDFmediathek in Germany, NOS in the Netherlands NOS, and the Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) in Australia.
Alongside TV web access, PlayStation's entertainment offering was strengthened with the announcement of the PlayStation

| Although Blu-ray is the dominant high definition disc format currently available, the Chinese have taken major elements of the defeated HD-DVD format and have created their own homegrown high definition disc format, CBHD (China Blue High Definition). The original intent of CBHD was to compete with Blu-ray within the Chinese market, where it has reportedly been successful. Now, British retailer GBAX is offering CBHD players to UK consumers. 18.4-inch multimedia monster
Toshiba has announced the launch of the Qosmio X500 boasting a "sleek, glossy black chassis, backlit keyboard and LED-feathertouch controls".
Powered by Intel's latest Quad Core processors and the latest nVIDIA GeForce graphics, the Qosmio X500 claims to deliver "a realistic gameplay experience with intense visuals, vibrant environments and dynamic character effects".
With an 18.4-inch TruBrite Full HD LCD screen with 16:9 aspect ratio at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, Harman Kardon stereo speakers, a rewritable Blu-ray drive, the X500 appears, on paper at least, to be an entertainment powerhouse.
It also gets Toshiba's Resolution+ upscaling technology, that sees standard definition DVDs and video files upconverted to "near high definition" quality.
Other features include an "HD" webcam, a multi-touch touch pad, fingerprint reader, face recognition, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, eight touch-sensitive multimedia buttons, up to 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, three USB ports all of which offer "Sleep-and-Charge" tech, REGZA-Link HDMI-CEC and a 5-in-1 card reader.
The Qosmio X500 will be available in the UK from late October - no pricing revealed, but it's gonna be steep.

| Mitsubishi Announces Super-Charged Blu-ray Disc Recorders....For Japan (About.com, 8/22/2009 10:00am) |
| Here we go again! Another announcement by a large Asian consumer electronics manufacturer that it is introducing a new line of Blu-ray Disc recorders, but, unfortunately, they will probably never see the light-of-day in the U.S.
What makes Mitsubishi's announcement even more frustrating is that these units are a home theater fan's dream: One unit combines Blu-ray Disc recording with a 1 Terabyte Hard Drive, a second unit offers a 500GB hard drive, while the third houses not only a Blu-ray Disc recorder and a 320 GB hard drive, but also includes a VHS deck. Of course, all these units can record in all the standard DVD recording format as well, and it also appears that they all have USB and SD Card slots for accessing additional digital content. To add more insult to injury, Mitsubishi has also announced a line of LCD TVs with built-in Blu-ray Disc/Hard Drive combos (See report from Tech-On!.
Blu-ray Disc recorders have been available in Japan for about two years, and not as much as a word about U.S. availability. What happened to the U.S. as the primary market for the latest in consumer electronics technology - especially when it comes to video recording? | Although Blu-ray Disc player and Disc sales have been on a steady upward pace since the end of the Blu-ray/HD-DVD format war, growth has not been as robust as the previous DVD growth timeline.
Of course, the current state of the economy doesn't help as many have postponed consumer electronics-related purchases. However, the other wrinkle is that Blu-ray Disc releases of new films have actually done very well, but sales of classic and older films that were previously released on DVD aren't. That is to be expected; since all Blu-ray Disc players can also play DVDs, many consumers don't see the need to replace their existing DVD collections.
This is where Disney comes in. Apparently, recent Blu-ray editions of previously DVD released classic films that may already be in many consumer's collections aren't doing as well as expected. However, what Disney may be failing to also see is that their Blu-ray Disc releases carry much higher price tags than releases from some of the other studios, which further limits their purchase and replacement appeal. Streaming movie service
LG has announced that it's adding movie streaming capability to its HDTV range in a deal with VUDU - a company that provides on-demand video over the web.
A library of over 2,000 high-definition movies will be available, as will some TV shows. The company says that there's no monthly fees and no additional hardware, and that you'll get full 1080p resolution and 5.1 surround sound.
To get the package, you'll need a LG's NetCast Entertainment Access, and a TV with an ethernet port. The compatible TVs range from 42-inch to 60-inch and also have content from Netflix, Yahoo Widgets, and YouTube. Existing LG Broadband TV owners should get the VUDU service next month, the company says.

Seems like slim wireless HDTVs are the CEDIA special, and LG's joining in the fun by announcing official US availability of the wireless LH-series, first launched at CES. No surprises here apart from price, they're exactly as they were when they popped into the FCC: the high-end $4,799 55-inch 55LHX has a local-dimming LED backlight, an 80,000:1 contrast ratio with 240Hz motion ruining enhancement and is less than an inch thick, while the LH85 line offers both $2,399 47-inch and $3,199 55-inch models. From LG comes a Blu-Ray based home cinema system. The HB954SP offers Full HD 1080p playback, 1000W of power and 5.1 channel output with five oval satellite speakers. LG's latest system offers one click access to YouTube and and an iPhone/iPod docking/charging station. LG Sound Gallery offers seven sound settings including a night mode to turn off the bass so you do not wake sleeping children. Connections include two HDMI inputs for hook up other devices such as a game console, DVD recorder or HD satellite box. This system will be available from November 2009 from major retailers and independents.

Hope you weren't too attached to the idea of "medium to large" sized OLED HDTVs coming from Sony this year, according to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the company's slipping share of TV sales mean profitability takes precedence over sweet, super slim new displays. Surprised by its inability to sell truckloads of $2,500 11-inch versions CEO Howard Stringer decided to put the project on the back burner, apparently more focused on things like competing in Wal-Mart and implementing cheaper LED technology for its LCDs. Hey, remember that ultra skinny, LED-backlit HDTV that JVC showed off at CEDIA UK earlier this year? The seven millimeter-thin LT-32WX50? Yeah, that very panel is making a second debut here in Atlanta, but it has somehow managed to slim down to 6.4 millimeters (at its thinnest point) and get a November ship date in the US. Weighing just 12.5 pounds, the 32-inch set packs a 4,000:1 contrast ratio, edged-light LED backlight system, a super wide color gamut (100 percent of sRGB and 90 percent of Adobe RGB), a 1080p native resolution, two HDMI sockets, VGA input and an RS-232c control port. The pain? Just under $3,000, or in other words, a small fortune.

It's not that surprising to learn Best Buy will be among those delivering a 1080p LCD with Blu-ray disc player packed in under its Insignia store brand, as we've been expecting rebadged units from overseas to hit the value market for some time. Marked "coming soon" at $599, it's easily a few hundred less than a comparable model from Sharp, but buyers will have to live without some of the newer line items like 120Hz motion processing and a contrast ratio higher than 20,000:1. Though we don't expect a lot in terms of load times, audio support or other features (no specs on the Blu-ray player noted) we're sure a bedroom or dorm room somewhere will find a spot for the NS-LBD32X. Your move, Wal-mart.

| The latest batch of televisions in the CR TV lab includes the new 46-inch Sony Bravia LCD. While many of us are gearing up for summer vacations, CR’s TV engineers are still hard at work testing more LCD and plasma TVs. Among this latest group are models with full-array LED backlights, and several 240Hz sets that take aim at reducing motion blur. We’re also looking at some new Toshiba models that will be the first to include Dolby Volume, a volume-leveling technology that attempts to minimize differences in loudness when you switch channels or when commercials come on. Here are the models currently being tested in our TV labs: LCD TVs Hitachi L26D103: This 26-inch 720p (1366x768) set is a TV/DVD combo with an integrated standard DVD player, headphone jack, and a built-in sleep timer. Hitachi L32A403: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set from Hitachi has four HDMI inputs, and comes with a swivel stand. JVC LT-46J300: This 46-inch 1080p LCD from JVC has the company’s TeleDock integrated iPod dock. LG 55LH90: This 55-inch 1080p LCD TV from LG is a high-featured model that has full-array LED backlights with local dimming, and the company’s TruMotion 240Hz technology, which combines a 120Hz refresh rate with a scanning backlight. It’s also a THX-certified set. Oddly for a higher-priced set, it doesn’t include access to LG’s NetCast Internet service. Magnavox 42MF439B/F7: Earlier this year Philips handed over the manufacturing and marketing of its Philips- and Magnavox-brand TVs in the U.S. to Funai, which also controls the Sylvania brand. This Magnavox, among the first TVs we've seen as part of the deal, is a lower-priced 42-inch 1080p LCD model that can play back digital photos and music stored on a USB flash drive. Philips 32PFL3504D: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set, available at mass merchants, warehouse clubs, regional dealers, and online retailers, is fairly low-priced for a major brand and includes a set-up assistant that uses an onscreen wizard to personalize settings. RCA L46FHD37R: A lower-cost 46-inch 1080p LCD, sold at Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Clubs, and other retailers, that include a light sensor that automatically adjusts contrast to room light conditions. Samsung LN52B750: This 52-inch 1080p LCD from Samsung has new Touch of Color cosmetics (charcoal gray) and the company's Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology that actually quadruples the TV’s frame rate. It also includes the company’s [email protected] Internet service, which uses Yahoo widgets to access online content, which will soon include instant movies from Blockbuster. Update to their popular model
Adding to the already popular D300 DSLR is the D300s, which brings HD movie capture to the party in a previous-anticipated move by Nikon.
With an effective 12.3-megapixels, the D300s offers 7fps continuous shooting (8 with battery pack) driven by the EXPEED image processor, and a 51-point focusing system.
The new video mode benefits from autofocus whilst shooting, but doesn't stretch to Full HD, instead offering a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720 at 24fps. Lower resolution options are also available.
Boosting the video option, you'll be able to attach an external mic thanks to a 3.5mm audio input. Video capture is sadly limited to 5 minutes in 720p, but can be extended to 20 minutes at lower resolutions.
Dual memory card slots have been added, giving you Compact Flash and Secure Digital, with flexible set-up options allowing you to shoot JPEGs to one and RAW to the other, or stills on one and video on the other.
Live View mode can be activated on the 3-inch 920k-dot display, whilst viewing your movies will be a breeze to view thanks to the on-board HDMI slot.
Available from 28 August, the Nikon D300s will set you back £1499.99, body only.
