digg_url = 'http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/sony-announces-new-slimmer-ps3-coming-first-week-of-sept/'; We know, we're as shocked as you are! Sony has used the GamesCom stage in Cologne to announce the oh-so-tiny PS3 Slim. The good news is that the system sports both a slimmer form factor (33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter and 34 percent less power use) a 120GB hard drive and the tidy price tag of $299. It boasts all the same features as the current PS3, which means still no backwards compatibility with your PS2 games. If you've been holding off on buying a chunkier PS3 until the inevitable release of its slimmer little brother, your wait will finally end in September. | NEWS: ATI launches Radeon HD 5700 graphics series (Pocket-lint, 10/13/2009 4:01am) |
Complete with DirectX 11 capabilities
ATI has just released a new series of graphics cards - the Radeon HD 5700s. Two cards initially make up the range, there's the Radeon HD 5750 and the meatier Radeon HD 5770. Both come with DirectX 11 capabilities and a host of other features that PC tweakers might be interested in.
The company says that this Radeon release is "all about future-proofing your graphics card". It reckons that this generation of cards can cope on high settings with every game currently out and in the near future, too. Plenty of DirectX 11 games are due out before Christmas, including DiRT2, Stalker: Call of Pripyat, and Battleforge that already has a patch that converts it to DX 11.
DirectX 11 brings tessellation, shader model 5, Directcompute 11, HDR texture compression and better multi-threading performance. The cards also support HDMI 1.3, have stream technology support, and come with three outputs so you can play with three monitors at?3 x 2560 x 1600 in what ATI is calling an "Eyefinity" setup.
The 5770 has 1.36 teraFLOPs of computing power and low-ish power consumption of 108W under load and 18W when idle. It comes with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and will cost $159. There's no UK pricing yet.
The 5750, on the other hand has 1.008 teraFLOPs of computing power and will take up 86W of power under load and 16W when idle. That'll come with the option of 1GB or 512MB of memory, with the former costing $129 and the latter costing more like $110. We'd be surprised if UK prices were lower, even at a 1 to 1 conversion rate.
Still, they're not exceptionally high either, meaning that if you're considering an upgrade then it might be worth asking for one of these in your stocking this Christmas.

 | LG unveils new slim design LCD HDTVs due this fall (Engadget, 7/31/2009 1:14am) |
Sure it's summertime in New York and not January in Las Vegas, but that didn't stop LG from rolling out a couple new lines of LCD HDTVs today. The new SL80 and SL90 models don't bring new high water marks on the spec sheets, but feature LG's take on the "borderless" design trend that's the rage these days, built from a single edge to edge piece of glass with a slim bezel and Invisible Speaker design. The top of the line SL90 is due later this year for an unspecified price range in 42- and 47-inch sizes with LED backlighting contributing to its 3,000,000:1 claimed contrast ratio and 1.15 inch depth, plus 120Hz TruMotion processing. The SL80 line has 240Hz processing, but older CCFL backlighting means a 300,000:1 measured contrast ratio and 1.8-inch thick design, but the 42-, 47-, and 55-inch models will be available this August for $1,599, $1,899 and $2,799, respectively. Want a closer look at LG's new global flat panel design platform? The gallery is right here. Gallery: LG's SL80 and SL90 hands-on

 | ATI adds first HD card to the All-in-Wonder lineup (TV Squad, 6/26/2008 5:31pm) |
Filed under: HDTV, PVR Wire, HardwareOnce upon a time, ATI's All-in-Wonder cards were the cream of the crop. The lineup combines a TV tuner with a graphics card. That means you don't need to buy two separate pieces of hardware to capture TV signals and to display those signals on a monitor. But while other hardware makers have been busy putting out HD tuner cards, ATI has been stuck in the dark ages of standard definition.
Now it looks like ATI is back in the game with the ATI All-in-Wonder HD. This PCI Express card has enough oomph to capture HD video and to play back HD video on your PC. It features DirectX 10.1 support, an MPEG2/VC-1/H2.64 decoder, and Vista and AMD Live! certification. It also packs a DVI port and HDMI jack.
On the TV tuner side of things, the AiW HD can handle SD, HD, and ClearQAM signals.The card should be available in July for $199.

 | Mitsubishi Announces Super-Charged Blu-ray Disc Recorders....For Japan (About.com, 8/22/2009 10:00am) |
| Here we go again! Another announcement by a large Asian consumer electronics manufacturer that it is introducing a new line of Blu-ray Disc recorders, but, unfortunately, they will probably never see the light-of-day in the U.S.
What makes Mitsubishi's announcement even more frustrating is that these units are a home theater fan's dream: One unit combines Blu-ray Disc recording with a 1 Terabyte Hard Drive, a second unit offers a 500GB hard drive, while the third houses not only a Blu-ray Disc recorder and a 320 GB hard drive, but also includes a VHS deck. Of course, all these units can record in all the standard DVD recording format as well, and it also appears that they all have USB and SD Card slots for accessing additional digital content. For details, check out the brief report from Akihabara News as well as the Official Announcement and Product Specifications from Mitsubishi (in Japanese with some technical terms in English).
To add more insult to injury, Mitsubishi has also announced a line of LCD TVs with built-in Blu-ray Disc/Hard Drive combos (See report from Tech-On!.
Blu-ray Disc recorders have been available in Japan for about two years, and not as much as a word about U.S. availability. What happened to the U.S. as the primary market for the latest in consumer electronics technology - especially when it comes to video recording? For some perspective, read my article: The Case of the Disappearing DVD Recorder.

 | News From CEDIA 2009: JVC Announces First Blu-ray Disc Recorders For U.S., Sort Of... (About.com, 9/10/2009 11:00pm) |
|
In an anncouncement that created some brief excitement at CEDIA, JVC introduced the first Blu-ray Disc recorders available in the U.S. market at a press conference early Thursday morning. However, the excitement was very short-lived when the actual details were revealed.
The new JVC Blu-ray disc recorders cannot, I repeat, cannot record high definition television programming, either from over-the-air (there is no built-in tuner or RF input), cable, or satellite; there are no HDMI or Component video inputs for recording hi-def video, only standard definition composite and S-Video.
However, each recorder comes equipped with a either a 250GB or 500GB hard drive and can record either standard or hi-def content from SD Cards and digital camcorders via USB or Firewire interface. The target market for these recorders is not the mainstream consumer, but video editors and related professionals.
The SR-HD1250 is priced at $1,995 and the SR-HD1500 is priced at $2,550. Both units will be sold through JVC's professional division. For more details, check out the Official Announcement from JVC. | Blu-ray Gets Big Boost From Sony, Best Buy, and Apple (About.com, 9/28/2009 10:00am) |
| For those that are still Blu-ray doubters, the trend is against you. Blu-ray has not only been on a continuous growth pattern despite the current lackluster economy, but may experience substantially increased growth as a result of four new developments.
First: The large number of Blu-ray Disc players introduced at the recent CEDIA EXPO from both mainstream and niche-brand manufacturers.
Second: Sony has revealed that its new Playstation 3 Slim (which has a built-in Blu-ray Disc player) has sold more than 1 million units since it was released on September 1st.
Third: Apple is finally jumping on the Blu-ray bandwagon with an announcement that it will be including a Blu-ray Disc drive in its upcoming series of iMacs.
Fourth: Best Buy has announced that it will be marketing a new line of its Insignia-brand LCD TVs that will include built-in Blu-ray Disc players; just in time for the 2009 Christmas and Winter Holiday Season.

 | JVC pocket camera shoots HD Video (Tech Digest, 10/13/2009 4:39pm) |
JVC has launched its first pocket flash memory camera, the new PICSIO GC-FM1. Combining true eight-megapixel stills and 1080p Full HD video it also offers image stabilisation for minimising camera shake, even when the 4X digital zoom is used, JVC claims. Videos are recorded in the widely-used MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format and stored as .MOV files for easy sharing without the need for time-consuming and potentially damaging conversion. Storage is on SD/SDHC memory cards. To suit individual shooting situations, PICSIO provides four video and still recording modes. About the size of a mobile phone the PICSIO is available in three colours - Black Ice, Blue Steel and Purple Passion and comes with a funky-looking geometric pattern and jewel-like appearance.

 | NEWS: Denon DBP-1610 Blu-ray player announced (Pocket-lint, 9/23/2009 2:43pm) |
"Price-conscious"
Denon has announced the launch of a "price-conscious" Blu-ray player, the new DBP-160.
The DBP-1610 boasts 1080/24p video output and supports Deep Color as well as x.v.Color and offers 1080p scaling for normal content.
With an Ethernet port for internet access for BD-Live and firmware updates, there's full support of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
Offering Divx playback as well as AVCHD playback from DVDs and SD cards, as you'd expect, the new machine plays nice with Denon's A/V product line.
Denon's idea of price-conscious may not be the same as most, however, the DBP-160 will go on sale next month for a penny under ?400.

 | LG LH-series wireless HDTVs now available Stateside (Engadget, 9/10/2009 6:12pm) |
Seems like slim wireless HDTVs are the CEDIA special, and LG's joining in the fun by announcing official US availability of the wireless LH-series, first launched at CES. No surprises here apart from price, they're exactly as they were when they popped into the FCC: the high-end $4,799 55-inch 55LHX has a local-dimming LED backlight, an 80,000:1 contrast ratio with 240Hz motion ruining enhancement and is less than an inch thick, while the LH85 line offers both $2,399 47-inch and $3,199 55-inch models. Check out our demo from CES for some hands-on with the ASW1000 Media Box, which is where the wireless HD action goes down.Filed under: HDTV, Home EntertainmentLG LH-series wireless HDTVs now available Stateside originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 13:12:00 EST. | Sony's big plans for OLED HDTVs may slip to next year (Engadget, 8/17/2009 11:04pm) |
Hope you weren't too attached to the idea of "medium to large" sized OLED HDTVs coming from Sony this year, according to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the company's slipping share of TV sales mean profitability takes precedence over sweet, super slim new displays. Surprised by its inability to sell truckloads of $2,500 11-inch versions CEO Howard Stringer decided to put the project on the back burner, apparently more focused on things like competing in Wal-Mart and implementing cheaper LED technology for its LCDs. With LG also on a timetable that puts us a year or more away from seeing one of these on store shelves in decent sizes, things are up to Samsung to bring it home -- we're waiting.Filed under: HDTVSony's big plans for OLED HDTVs may slip to next year originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 18:04:00 EST. | JVC's ultraslim 32-inch LT-32WX50 HDTV landing in November for $3,000 (Engadget, 9/10/2009 5:23pm) |
Hey, remember that ultra skinny, LED-backlit HDTV that JVC showed off at CEDIA UK earlier this year? The seven millimeter-thin LT-32WX50? Yeah, that very panel is making a second debut here in Atlanta, but it has somehow managed to slim down to 6.4 millimeters (at its thinnest point) and get a November ship date in the US. Weighing just 12.5 pounds, the 32-inch set packs a 4,000:1 contrast ratio, edged-light LED backlight system, a super wide color gamut (100 percent of sRGB and 90 percent of Adobe RGB), a 1080p native resolution, two HDMI sockets, VGA input and an RS-232c control port. The pain? Just under $3,000, or in other words, a small fortune. | Toshiba unveils Blu-ray player, price, specs (AfterDawn, 9/05/2009 2:32am) |
Via a press release today, Toshiba has put the final nail in HD DVD's coffin, unveiling their first Blu-ray player, the BDX2000.
The full specs read as follows:
* BD-Live(TM) (Profile 2.0)
* 1080p/ 24 fps Full HD Video Output
* AVCHD Playback
* Toshiba REGZA-LINK(R) (HDMI-CEC)
* Support for enhanced audio formats from Dolby(R) True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio | Essential(TM) Playback
* Bonus View
* SD Card Slot
* ENERGY STAR(R) Certified
"Toshiba is a technology leader in high definition products," says Jodi Sally, Vice President of Marketing, Digital A/V Group. "From listening to our consumers we know they demand access to full high definition content. With the introduction of our BDX2000 we are offering consumers what they want with a breath-taking HD viewing experience to meet the needs of today's home theater."
The REGZA-LINK, much like how Sony does with Bravia TVs, allows for users to connect a Regza HDTV to the Blu-ray player via HDMI, and then control both from one single remote controller. It's unclear what formats the player can read off the SD cards, but standard MP3, WMA, JPEG and AVI should not be a problem.
The player will hit stores in November and have $249.99 MSRP.
