[ Photo: Consumer Reports ] We've just added more than a dozen new camcorders to our Ratings, including nine high-definition and five standard-definition models. The new batches reveal a number of trends that, for the most part, will benefit consumers: Both HD and SD camcorders are cheaper to buy: About 18 months ago, the cheapest HD camcorder in our Ratings was $590. Now, there are three models available for less than $575. (The cheapest is the Sanyo VPC-CA9, for $375.) Manufacturers are producing more flash-based and hard-disk models and fewer MiniDV and DVD disc models than in the past. However, we still have at least four models of each of these older formats, and they're generally less expensive than the flash and hard-disk models. More optical zoom: SD models have optical zooms as high as 70x. HD models have also increased, with some models including 16x optical zoom lenses. Most models are smaller, lighter and easier to carry. Some can almost slip into a pocket. However, with this reduction in size comes some trade offs, such as the elimination of a viewfinder. This can be a problem when trying to shoot on a bright day, since the sun can wash out the image on your display, making it a challenge to compose your video. One common problem we've found in nearly all HD and SD camcorder models of the past was that they didn't perform well in low light. But our newest batch has some exceptions to this rule, at least among the high-def models. Look to our Ratings to see which HD camcorders excelled in low light. Manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric, the giant four-sided screen has a surface area of about 1058 sq m (11,400 sq ft). "This is probably the most exciting project we've ever been involved with," said Mark Foster of Mitsubishi Electric.
Mitsubishi said the video board is the equivalent size of 3,268 52-inch television sets, packs more than 10 million light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and with all four panels account for, weighs around 600 tonnes.

Clearly worried the Blu-ray still not enough
Samsung has announced that going forward all its Blu-ray products will come with YouTube support as it continues to try and convince people to embrace the HD format.
With the new service, available from 3rd September, consumers can also enjoy video clips from YouTube on their TV screen. The YouTube service features a variety of video clips, including the most popular or highly rated videos and allows for video search through a mobile phone-like on-screen key pad, says the company.
The news, announced at IFA in Berlin, Germany, comes as the company announcing a range of Blu-ray players including a Blu-ray Soundbar, the BD Crystal Surround AirTrack, for people looking to de-clutter their home theatre/cinema experience.

| The latest batch of televisions in the CR TV lab includes the new 46-inch Sony Bravia LCD. While many of us are gearing up for summer vacations, CR’s TV engineers are still hard at work testing more LCD and plasma TVs. Among this latest group are models with full-array LED backlights, and several 240Hz sets that take aim at reducing motion blur. We’re also looking at some new Toshiba models that will be the first to include Dolby Volume, a volume-leveling technology that attempts to minimize differences in loudness when you switch channels or when commercials come on. Here are the models currently being tested in our TV labs: LCD TVs Hitachi L26D103: This 26-inch 720p (1366x768) set is a TV/DVD combo with an integrated standard DVD player, headphone jack, and a built-in sleep timer. Hitachi L32A403: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set from Hitachi has four HDMI inputs, and comes with a swivel stand. JVC LT-46J300: This 46-inch 1080p LCD from JVC has the company’s TeleDock integrated iPod dock. LG 55LH90: This 55-inch 1080p LCD TV from LG is a high-featured model that has full-array LED backlights with local dimming, and the company’s TruMotion 240Hz technology, which combines a 120Hz refresh rate with a scanning backlight. It’s also a THX-certified set. Oddly for a higher-priced set, it doesn’t include access to LG’s NetCast Internet service. Magnavox 42MF439B/F7: Earlier this year Philips handed over the manufacturing and marketing of its Philips- and Magnavox-brand TVs in the U.S. to Funai, which also controls the Sylvania brand. This Magnavox, among the first TVs we've seen as part of the deal, is a lower-priced 42-inch 1080p LCD model that can play back digital photos and music stored on a USB flash drive. Philips 32PFL3504D: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set, available at mass merchants, warehouse clubs, regional dealers, and online retailers, is fairly low-priced for a major brand and includes a set-up assistant that uses an onscreen wizard to personalize settings. RCA L46FHD37R: A lower-cost 46-inch 1080p LCD, sold at Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Clubs, and other retailers, that include a light sensor that automatically adjusts contrast to room light conditions. Samsung LN52B750: This 52-inch 1080p LCD from Samsung has new Touch of Color cosmetics (charcoal gray) and the company's Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology that actually quadruples the TV’s frame rate. It also includes the company’s [email protected] Internet service, which uses Yahoo widgets to access online content, which will soon include instant movies from Blockbuster. Also comes with some preloaded content, such as recipes and games. It can wirelessly connect to a home network via an optional USB wireless dongle. | This hot little number is an external Blu-Ray player for computers that Asus hopes to have on shelves later this month. What surprised us the most is the fact that the one and only connector you'll see along the sides of the unit is one for a USB attachment — no HDMI, no AC jack to plug this thing into the wall. It does everything via USB.
Hopefully Asus will give it a cooler name than "SBC-04D1S-U" by the time it launches. According to the company it can write DVD-Rs and CD-Rs in addition to reading Blu-Ray. It also has a "Turbo Engine for enhanced USB Connectivity" — which is vaguely responsible for cranking HD goodness to your screen — and comes with a vertical stand and Cyberlink software.

Watching the development of super-thin OLED video displays is a lot like watching a baby grow up. The early pictures show a little, cute, and sometimes clever toddler, showing great promise. Soon the kid starts getting more sophisticated, like this 15-inch OLED HDTV from LG that goes on sale in Korea this November, and the rest of the world next year.
Of course, we're assuming you'll pay a pretty penny for this attractive, ultra-sharp bauble, probably in the neighborhood of Sony's $2500 11-inch XEL-1 OLED display that rolled out a couple of years ago. So LG is next. And then there were two.
Bigger OLED screens can't be that far off, but wait, now we find out LG's 30-inch OLED display has been delayed until 2012, and Sony is putting off its next OLED screen, too. What's the holdup? Entirely new manufacturing techniques must be developed. One day soon, though, these fantastic displays will be cheap.

In the States, Pure Digital has launched a new "premium" version of its Flip MinoHD pocket camcorder that sees a few feature additions for an extra $30.
Priced at $229 and boasting 8GB of storage for 2 hours of 720p video, a larger 2-inch screen and an HDMI port, the premium model gets either an aluminium shell or a personalised design from Flip's website. ?
There's also a new version of the FlipShare software with an "automatic Magic Movie mode" that auto-trims and edits clips before uploads.

Mitsubishi has unveiled a 155-inch OLED TV this week at the CEATEC 2009 event in Japan, showcasing one of the largest displays ever for OLED.
Mainichi Japan says the "OLED display consists of 720 10-centimeter-square OLED blocks that can be rearranged to change the dimensions of the display using Mitsubishi's Aurora Vision LED screens at baseball stadiums."
The screen is also about three times brighter than any current LCD TV. Lifespan is about 200,000 hours.
Being that the OLED blocks are so small means Mitsubishi can create a TV of any size, ranging from the now standard 15-inch TVs to infinity.

People might think it's extravagant but this old timer deserves a little pampering".
Shame on the vet that chimes in with: "Belly Bumps has been responding to the action on screen. The clarity of the images and sound provide a great stimulus, and her ears are constantly pricked forward showing she's engaged with the television. She seems to recognise some of her fellow stable mates and viewing other horses will certainly stop her feeling lonely".
It's all in order to promote 4 days of live coverage of the Longines Royal International Horse Show in high definition on Sky Sports from Thursday 23 July.

Starting today, those fortunate enough to own an LG Broadband HDTV in the LH50 LCD series and PS80 plasma range can tap into VUDU's growing library of on-demand 1080p films. If you're still skeptical, we'll invite you to surf over to your set's Netcast interface; from there, you can either update your software to gain VUDU access or begin viewing right away (depending on when you purchased your tele). Oh, and if you're thinking of just lallygagging around while the rest of the world takes advantage, you should know that your first HD or HDX movie rental is gratis for a limited time, so there's some pretty obvious motivation to hop on it. LG has announced that their LH90 model has become the first THX Display certified LCD HDTV.
According to HighDefDigest "the 240hz capable LH90 features LED backlighting with local dimming for precise picture control and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio ensuring a ridiculously good picture."
Says Peter Reiner, LG VP of marketing: “LG's advanced LED Backlight technology precisely controls the brightness of specific areas of the screen, providing crisper, clearer pictures while using less energy than traditional LCD models.”
The HDTV also has THX Movie Mode, which allows owners auto-adjustments for black levels, colors and signal.

18.4-inch multimedia monster
Toshiba has announced the launch of the Qosmio X500 boasting a "sleek, glossy black chassis, backlit keyboard and LED-feathertouch controls".
Powered by Intel's latest Quad Core processors and the latest nVIDIA GeForce graphics, the Qosmio X500 claims to deliver "a realistic gameplay experience with intense visuals, vibrant environments and dynamic character effects".
With an 18.4-inch TruBrite Full HD LCD screen with 16:9 aspect ratio at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, Harman Kardon stereo speakers, a rewritable Blu-ray drive, the X500 appears, on paper at least, to be an entertainment powerhouse.
It also gets Toshiba's Resolution+ upscaling technology, that sees standard definition DVDs and video files upconverted to "near high definition" quality.
Other features include an "HD" webcam, a multi-touch touch pad, fingerprint reader, face recognition, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, eight touch-sensitive multimedia buttons, up to 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, three USB ports all of which offer "Sleep-and-Charge" tech, REGZA-Link HDMI-CEC and a 5-in-1 card reader.
The Qosmio X500 will be available in the UK from late October - no pricing revealed, but it's gonna be steep.

Seagate has announced the launch of the new FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player, described as the "next generation home theatre solution designed to instantly and easily connect your digital media library to your home entertainment system".
The player has a docking system that offers a quick and easy way to connect Seagate external hard drives to televisions or home entertainment centres.
With what's said to be an easy to navigate interface and supplied remote control, movies, videos, music and images can then be viewed on a large-screen TV with support for 1080p HD video, DTS 2.0 + Digital Out, and Dolby Digital technology.
There's also two additional USB ports for connecting other USB storage devices and an Ethernet port for network connectivity.
The Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player is available now for $149.99 (?90 as a direct translation), with a wireless adapter due to be available in October as a separate accessory through Seagate.com for $69.99 (?42).
In addition, Seagate has also announced the FreeAgent DockStar network adapter, that will connect a FreeAgent Go portable hard drive to a network, giving access to its content from anywhere in or outside of the home (with the Pogoplug service), as well as allowing for file sharing.
"In a matter of minutes a drive can become accessible through any Internet connected computer, as well as through an innovative iPhone application", says Seagate.
The FreeAgent DockStar network adapter is available now for $99.99 (?60). The Pogoplug service for remote access and sharing, is free for a year, then $29.99 per year afterwards.

| The Samsung Instinct HD. [PHOTO courtesy of Samsung] The Samsung Instinct HD, available from Sprint for $250 with a two-year contract after a $100 mail-in rebate, is the first cell phone we've seen that claims to make high-definition video recordings. It also boasts a 5-megapixel still camera with flash. That camera is a step up from the flashless, 2-megapixel camera found on previous Instincts, also from Sprint, including the S30 version now in our Ratings, available to subscribers. We’re evaluating the Instinct HD now, and will post full test results on it to our Ratings later this month. Meantime, our initial results on its imaging are promising, albeit with a few quibbles. The new Instinct’s camera is easy to access, thanks to a dedicated camera button, conveniently located on the lower right side of the phone. Pushing the button activates the camera’s still mode. Tapping a camera icon on the upper left of the largish (1.78 x 2.66 in.) display switches the camera to video mode. Tapping again summons controls for auto-focus, exposure, and other camera functions. The Instinct HD claims it can record video resolution of 1280 x 720p, which is a true HD format—although, as we often point out, HD format alone does not assure images of pristine, high-definition quality. To assess quality, we shot a series of videos on the Instinct and hooked it up to a 50-inch Panasonic plasma television using the optional ($30) HDMI cable. Our findings: Color was good in the MPEG4 videos, though they lacked fine detail and texture. They blurred even more when we panned the camera to the left or right. In short, they couldn’t rival the image quality you’d enjoy from full-sized HD camcorders in our Ratings, available to subscribers. But such camcorders are much bigger and pricier than the Instinct HD, and do nothing except shoot video and stills. The high-def video quality of the Instinct was comparable to what you’d get from a standard-definition pocket camcorder, such as the Flip. And that's still way ahead of the video we've seen any other camera phone. A few details and quibbles: The HDMI cable has a proprietary connector that works only with the Samsung HD, so you may have trouble finding a replacement if it's lost while you're on vacation. You can't use the cable for showing stills on your TV. If your TV has an SD memory-card slot, you can play photos and videos off of the phone's 4GB microSD memory card (the phone comes with an SD memory card adaptor). Unfortunately, accessing the card is a pain. You have to open the phone's back cover and remove the battery, which shuts off the phone. And the still-image performance of the Instinct? Pictures were sharp and well-defined, with good color overall on the TV screen, though shots taken in low light still looked dark—even with the flash. We just got a real eyeful of 3D, courtesy of Panasonic's upcoming 1080p plasma and Blu-ray 3D setup. The system uses synced shutters, and was easily some of the best "consumer" 3D we've seen -- almost on par with a theater experience, other than the fact that the screen was a whole lot smaller, at 103-inches. Unfortunately, while Panasonic is heavily touting 3D at IFA this year, just as Sony did at its own presser, there isn't much hard news to show for it. The plasma and Blu-ray combo was actually announced a full year ago, and the only word we have on release at the moment is "next year." Obviously, readily available 3D content plays a big part in this, and we get the impression that Avatar is syncing up nicely to be available on some sort of 3D home video format by the time it's ready for a disc release -- we've certainly seen enough teaser clips and trailers of it by now, anyway. To be honest, the 3D setup was seamless enough in our demo room that sometimes it hardly felt 3D. Avatar was especially "shallow" on the 3D scale (no pictures were allowed of the presentation, not that they would help), and we've yet to see anything mindblowing on that end. If anything, Panasonic's presentation was more an opportunity to be "blown away" by the company's awesome PowerPoint skills, if anything, so feel free to follow along in the gallery below.

New players with all the usual bells and whistles
Philips has announced two new Blu-ray players at IFA in Berlin as it continues to push ahead with the format that has trebled in popularity in the last year.
The new BDP7500 will be housed in an "real" aluminum (we not sure what fake aluminum is) and offer full HD 1080p at 24 fps for cinema-like images.
The players will also get DivX Ultra for enhanced playback of DivX media files, DVD video upscaling to 1080p via HDMI for near-HD images, and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA for HD 7.1 surround sound. BD-Live (Profile 2.0), and USB drive connectivity complete the package.
A rather niche technology also included is subtitle shift allowing you to change the location of the subtitles on screen.
The players themselves will come with touch sensitive controls and for the design conscious three different colours; blue, red and black.
No word on pricing, but expect the devices to hit the UK early next year.

Don't think you can sell the kids short anymore, keeping the Blu-ray copy at home and taking DVD rips on the road, now that Panasonic is ready to deliver its in-dash Blu-ray player and 7-inch HD screen packing nav unit in September. We got a good peek at these back in April and the specs haven't changed, with the Profile 1.1 Bonus View compatible CY-BB1000D taking care of Blu-ray duties and featuring the same UniPhier guts as the company's line of living room Blu-ray players. The CN-HX3000D is a WXGA 1280x720p 7-inch LED backlit widescreen display ready to play back media via standard HDMI, iPod connector, SD card or its digital TV tuner, powered by Windows Automotive with navigation duties assisted by Google Maps and Yahoo! Japan. The CY-BB1000D is ¥99,750 ($1,057) and the CN-HX3000D is ¥365,400 ($3,872), and both arrive September 10 in Japan. We'll let you decide if around 5 grand is a good price for the in car HD experience (might want to look at custom mounting a DMP-B15, $800 and you can take it with you.)

Can't wait until December for Toshiba's CELL REGZA LCD? Sony is bringing its own 56-inch 3,840x2160 quad-HD display to market November 1 in Japan. Priced at 6,825,000 ($76,583) including taxes this is clearly for pros only, hence the TRIMASTER name referring to the three elements combined within -- exact color, accurate picture and reliability -- thanks to a RGB LED backlit panel built with incredible picture reproduction and exact calibration (with included software via a connected PC) in mind. While it's cheaper than JVC's $175k 4K projector, unless you're mastering the next Pixar flick, viewing high res satellite imagery or can't live without four HD feeds on one screen even the most well heeled amongst may be better served scouring bargain bins for a used Westinghouse D56QX1 for now.

In a column published today on Develop, Black Rock Studio (Pure, Split/Second) technical director David Jeffrries revealed that Microsoft has removed an item from its TCRs (Technical Certification Requirements) that stated all Xbox 360 games must run at a minimum of 1280x720 (720p) resolution if the system is in HD mode. According to Jeffries, this was done earlier this year so that developers could be "free to make the trade-off between resolution and image quality as we see fit."
TCRs are technical "rules" that all games developed for a given platform must adhere to in order to be certified for release. Of course, some games that have skirted this specific TCR have still been allowed on the system; the most notable being Microsoft's own Halo 3, which runs at 1152x640 (progressive).
Joystiq has confirmed with a trusted source familiar with Microsoft's TCRs that Jeffries' claim is legit. Not only that, but, as of March 2009, Xbox 360 developers are no longer required to utilize full-screen anti-aliasing in their games. The elimination of both requirements is especially noteworthy since the console maker had touted that all 360 games would run at a minimum of 720p with at least 2x FSAA since before the hardware launched.
As Jeffries points out in his column, 1280x720 isn't necessarily the "starting point" for HD on many displays and that it's not nearly as crucial as anti-aliasing. It's not clear if the back-tracking on Microsoft's part was due to pressure from the development community or not, but we can probably all agree that, as long as a game looks great, it doesn't really matter how its creators got there.
