 | News From CEDIA 2009: JVC Announces First Blu-ray Disc Recorders For U.S., Sort Of... (About.com, 9/10/2009 11:00pm) |
|
In an anncouncement that created some brief excitement at CEDIA, JVC introduced the first Blu-ray Disc recorders available in the U.S. market at a press conference early Thursday morning. However, the excitement was very short-lived when the actual details were revealed.
The new JVC Blu-ray disc recorders cannot, I repeat, cannot record high definition television programming, either from over-the-air (there is no built-in tuner or RF input), cable, or satellite; there are no HDMI or Component video inputs for recording hi-def video, only standard definition composite and S-Video.
However, each recorder comes equipped with a either a 250GB or 500GB hard drive and can record either standard or hi-def content from SD Cards and digital camcorders via USB or Firewire interface. In the UK, the high street record and video stores will play a fairly prominent role in deciding how high definition discs fare.
If they follow the lead of many US stores, Blu-ray could do quite well. That is, if they decide to push the HD formats at all. Shelf space is at a premium, and DVDs still account for a huge proportion of the market.

 | Toshiba introduces first Cell-powered HDTV (AfterDawn, 10/05/2009 10:24pm) |
Toshiba has unveiled their first HDTV to use the extremely powerful PS3 Cell processor today during the CEATEC event in Japan, and the TV packs a serious punch.
Besides the processor, the 55-inch REGZA 55X1 includes LED-backlighting, 240Hz refresh rate, and dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1. The Cell processor also allows for improved image quality, stronger colors, enhanced brightness balance and a "luminance of 1250cd/m²."
The TV also has a 7-speaker sound bar, and has DLNA support as well as a built in HD web browser created by Opera.
More notably, the HDTV has a 3TB HDD allowing users to record up to 26 hours of 1080p content from 8 channels, at the same time. As pictured below, the Regza can also display 8 channels at the same time, with no delay when switching between stations.
Toshiba also dropped word that they plan to use the Cell processor in an upcoming TV that will upconvert 1080p films to 3840 x 2160.
The TV will leave a dent in your wallet however, and is retailing for 1 million yen in Japan (about $11,000 USD) and Toshiba says it anticipates 1000 sales before release in North America next year.

 | Mitsubishi Announces Super-Charged Blu-ray Disc Recorders....For Japan (About.com, 8/22/2009 10:00am) |
| Here we go again! Another announcement by a large Asian consumer electronics manufacturer that it is introducing a new line of Blu-ray Disc recorders, but, unfortunately, they will probably never see the light-of-day in the U.S.
What makes Mitsubishi's announcement even more frustrating is that these units are a home theater fan's dream: One unit combines Blu-ray Disc recording with a 1 Terabyte Hard Drive, a second unit offers a 500GB hard drive, while the third houses not only a Blu-ray Disc recorder and a 320 GB hard drive, but also includes a VHS deck. Of course, all these units can record in all the standard DVD recording format as well, and it also appears that they all have USB and SD Card slots for accessing additional digital content. For details, check out the brief report from Akihabara News as well as the Official Announcement and Product Specifications from Mitsubishi (in Japanese with some technical terms in English).
To add more insult to injury, Mitsubishi has also announced a line of LCD TVs with built-in Blu-ray Disc/Hard Drive combos (See report from Tech-On!.
Blu-ray Disc recorders have been available in Japan for about two years, and not as much as a word about U.S. availability. What happened to the U.S. as the primary market for the latest in consumer electronics technology - especially when it comes to video recording? For some perspective, read my article: The Case of the Disappearing DVD Recorder.

 | Does the Samsung Instinct HD really shoot HD video? (Consumer Reports, 10/08/2009 7:02pm) |
| The Samsung Instinct HD. [PHOTO courtesy of Samsung] The Samsung Instinct HD, available from Sprint for $250 with a two-year contract after a $100 mail-in rebate, is the first cell phone we've seen that claims to make high-definition video recordings. It also boasts a 5-megapixel still camera with flash. That camera is a step up from the flashless, 2-megapixel camera found on previous Instincts, also from Sprint, including the S30 version now in our Ratings, available to subscribers. We’re evaluating the Instinct HD now, and will post full test results on it to our Ratings later this month. Meantime, our initial results on its imaging are promising, albeit with a few quibbles. The new Instinct’s camera is easy to access, thanks to a dedicated camera button, conveniently located on the lower right side of the phone. Pushing the button activates the camera’s still mode. Tapping a camera icon on the upper left of the largish (1.78 x 2.66 in.) display switches the camera to video mode. Tapping again summons controls for auto-focus, exposure, and other camera functions. The Instinct HD claims it can record video resolution of 1280 x 720p, which is a true HD format—although, as we often point out, HD format alone does not assure images of pristine, high-definition quality. To assess quality, we shot a series of videos on the Instinct and hooked it up to a 50-inch Panasonic plasma television using the optional ($30) HDMI cable. Our findings: Color was good in the MPEG4 videos, though they lacked fine detail and texture. They blurred even more when we panned the camera to the left or right. In short, they couldn’t rival the image quality you’d enjoy from full-sized HD camcorders in our Ratings, available to subscribers. But such camcorders are much bigger and pricier than the Instinct HD, and do nothing except shoot video and stills. The high-def video quality of the Instinct was comparable to what you’d get from a standard-definition pocket camcorder, such as the Flip. And that's still way ahead of the video we've seen any other camera phone. A few details and quibbles: The HDMI cable has a proprietary connector that works only with the Samsung HD, so you may have trouble finding a replacement if it's lost while you're on vacation. You can't use the cable for showing stills on your TV. If your TV has an SD memory-card slot, you can play photos and videos off of the phone's 4GB microSD memory card (the phone comes with an SD memory card adaptor). Unfortunately, accessing the card is a pain. You have to open the phone's back cover and remove the battery, which shuts off the phone. And the still-image performance of the Instinct? Pictures were sharp and well-defined, with good color overall on the TV screen, though shots taken in low light still looked dark—even with the flash. Camera controls were fairly responsive for a phone, with an acceptable next-shot delay. Our photo engineers are currently giving the Instinct HD's... (Read Full Article) |
 | BBC wants to lock-down Freeview HD content (AfterDawn, 9/18/2009 7:01am) |
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has appealed to regulator Ofcom to be allowed to use encryption on Freeview HD data to prevent piracy. Of course, the request was immediately criticized as under licensing rules, the BBC is not allowed to encrypt video or audio streams. However, the BBC is requesting it be allowed to encrypt the data associated with TV listings, which in effect will stop set-top boxes from decoding TV content.
"We are committed to ensuring that public service content remains free to air i.e. unencrypted," the broadcaster said in a statement. "However, HD content holders have begun to expect a degree of content management on the Freeview HD platform and therefore broadcasters have recognised that a form of copy protection is needed."
A vocal critic of the plan is Labour MP Tom Watson, who says the plan results in limiting consumer choices. "In an attempt to satisfy the fears of powerful rights holders, the BBC will prohibit millions of people from programming their existing set top boxes," he in a blog entry. "If implemented this will make it difficult to view or record HDTV broadcasts with free software. Where's the consumer interest in that settlement?"
Under the new system, only trusted manufacturers would be offered the decryption keys for the HD data. Many set-top-boxes use open source software such as Linux to bring down costs, and critics say that the BBC's request will hit these boxes, because DRM is incompatible with open source software. As a result, it would be more difficult for producers of the boxes to get the necessary permissions from the BBC.Permalink | Comments

 | PSA: Microsoft not planning Blu-ray drive for 360 (Joystiq, 10/22/2009 11:55pm) |
Today has seen several reports that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has confirmed a Blu-ray drive accessory for the Xbox 360. The purported revelation came from a Gizmodo interview, during which Ballmer said that 360 owners wanting a Blu-ray player could purchase "Blu-ray drives as accessories."
Clearing the air, Microsoft's Larry Hryb (a.k.a. Major Nelson) has gone on the record saying that the company has "no plans" for a 360 Blu-ray drive, adding that Ballmer was actually referring to Blu-ray drives for PCs. Hryb reiterates -- as did Ballmer -- that the main push for the Xbox 360 will be streaming media, noting specifically that the upcoming Dashboard update will bring instant 1080p streaming, a feature of the Zune Video Marketplace. Now, say it with us (one more time): Blu-ray isn't coming to the Xbox 360.PSA: Microsoft not planning Blu-ray drive for 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 18:55:00 EST.
