Image "warping" on HDTV — Community

Greetings,

I have a Philips 30" HDTV, but I have noticed a problem with the image: bright images seem to "pull" the sides of the screen making obvious changes to the geometry of the image. Is this a power supply problem? What steps can I take to amend this? The "warping" seems to go away if I lower the picture and brightness settings on the TV, but that obviously makes the image too dark for normal viewing. I already know how to access the manufacturer's menu if that can help. Thanks in advance.

Yep. To reduce this artifact you only need reduce contrast, that is what drags down the supply. You may need to touch up black level/brightness since they typically interact. Yes that can greatly reduce light output depending on how poorly the supply is designed. Also keep a look out for ABL circuits which change the black level based on bright image content - can bury your blacks and setting it right makes dark scenes washed out.

Don't shoot the messenger but your display is what it is and there is nothing you can do but replace it with one that is designed for performance rather than dollars.

Best direct view CRT for the money is/was Sony. Bear in mind the market is all about MD, microdisplays, and flat panels so big and heavy products are getting less and less performance attention... Just about everybody has pulled out of CRT RP and looks like flat panels are going to take over the small screen market from CRT DV.

Thank you for answering. Would replacing the PSU solve the problem? I think my power supply has something wrong with it anyway, sometimes I will hear a lot of pops and crackles, even when the TV has been on for a while...how much would it cost to get the PSU replaced? Thanks again.

The sweet Sony CRT HDTVs are almost all gone. The XBR 910 - 960 (not the 970) and XS955 Super Fine Pitch Tubes, the premium tubes, are getting very hard to find.

I live in BC Canada and paid almost $600 to ship my 34XS955 from an outfit in the big apple.

It is a design/performance flaw that is common as dirt to reduce the sales price. Sorry but to be frank Philips is not on the performance list for anything! Philips = cost cutting designs for the mass market.

Sounds like the normal static sounds you can get with any CRT based display due to the 30-40K volts to run the CRT.
