16 to 9 Ratio

I played a DVD yesterday in widescreen. I have a 16 to 9 Panasonic plasma. Why do I have bars on the top and bottom in normal mode? These bars are annoying and can cause burn in. Why can't they do the movies in 16 to 9????? That is why I bought a 16 to 9 HD set!

Don,
The link above is a good start, but search the boards. There are tons of posts regarding OAR (original aspect ratio) and how movies fit on tv's.
