could it be the provider i have? i have had 2 other people say that my providers locals do not come in well pretty much not a good provider.

Satellite is not cable so the answer is no. This is also a 65" display...

I have this exact same TV, only the 57" variety: 57731. I just purchased it a few weeks ago as well. And YES, I am envious of your extra 8 inches.

1. Set Video Noise to "Off"
2. Set Picture Mode to "Natural"
3. Set Color Temp to "Low"

Also, make sure your HD box (mine is the HR20 DirecTV DVR) is set to the following. the setup can be accessed by pressing "Menu" then choosing "Settings" - "Display"

Native: On
Screen Format: Pillar Box (so it doesn't stretch 4:3 content

then on "Settings" - "TV Type":

TV Ratio: Widescreen 16:9
TV Resolutions: (select all: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i)

Note that if you have a different DirecTV receiver, your settings may vary.

Also note that if you are viewing your locals delivered via satellite ... these are almost ALWAYS crappy. I choose to pick mine up via antenna.

If you have an older DirecTV receiver the SD stuff will look horrible. The newer receivers have made a huge leap in SD picture quality. Upgrade to the HR20-700 if possible - SD looks great.

I'm not sure what your concerned about. SD WILL look bad on a large HDTV. I have a Sony 60" SXRD and SD looks bad. Now, I'm compairing it to high definition (1080i). I have DirecTV and Comcast cable. I use OTA for local HD broadcast. All sources have lousy looking SD including "digital" channels. All sources have super HD. All we can hope for is someday all sources will be high definition. One other comment. For the best SD images on a large wide screen TV, DON"T stretch the picture. Set your TV to display SD with black bars on the left and right of the image. Distorting the image only makes it look worse.

SD is not bad looking when delivered properly so HD is not was is needed, just a hell of a lot less compression!!! If they could just change out the whole system to MPEG4 so much of this would improve including HD lite... but that is a pipe dream for the short term as the infrastructure is vast and firmly entrenched.

I am VERY concerned as to what will happen with my great SD once the cable company goes all digital... digital means they can compress that which they never ever could.

Also reduce contrast. It is set to Max.

The TV display 1080p no matter what the input is. That means the signal (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p) has to be upconverted. This can be done in your satellite receiver, an upconverting AV amplifier, your TV or an external scaler. In most cases, your TV will do the best job. You want to set the satellite receiver to pass the native signal and not upconvert.

One final thing. I hope you got a great price. If you have a choice I would return the 65731 and purchase the 65732 (or this years model). It has been reported to do a much better job of upconverting the image.

I have the Mits 65732 and SD content looks ok to great depending on the material.

I agree with you Richard that a Cable or Satellite company can mess up digital. However, my cable company went all digital and it improved the picture quality immensly. YMMV

Sorry to reply so late. I have the Mitsubishi 57732. I've had th 52631 and the 57731 (don't ask) as well. These things need to be calibrated out of the box. Even an hour with Ultimate DVD can make a huge difference.

HT Guys posted their settings. You will probably need to adjust them. I find them too green and too blue. However, I sit directly in front of a painted olive green wall, so the reflections obviously play a major role.

SD still won't look great if you sit close to the TV. Give it time and your eyes will adjust a bit. However, it will still look, well, "awful" to anyone that's not used to your TV. Doesn't the HD picture look sweet?

I have the Mitsubishi 57732. I've had th 52631 and the 57731 (don't ask) as well.

I know you said not to ... but as a new owner of the 57731 I just must.

What was your experience with the 57731?

Shane, my experiences with both previous units were fine.

I bought a 52631 at Fry's. (The only annoying experience with that was having to deal w/ folks in Texas who thought I was nuts picking up a RPTV without a truck. The 52631 fit inside the hatch of my Prius --box and all!) Two weeks later they put a 57731 on sale for $1 cheaper. Fry's has a 30-day guarantee. I returned the 52631, got a 57731 and bought some gum with the $1store credit. Three weeks later (the 30-day resets with each purchase), they put a 57732 on sale for the same price as the 57731. I returned the 57731 and bought a 57732 (no extra $ needed). My original sales guy said he would do the same thing if he were in my position. A couple of weeks after that they put the 73732 on sale for $1k more than I paid for the 57732. I briefly thought about it, then shook my head and said, "Enough"! I decided to spend the $1k on media furniture, a HD-DVD player (possibly a Blu-Ray to follow) and a little bit towards an A/V receiver.

They NEVER put the diamond models on sale though!
