Sony updated its Blu-ray Disc player line today with two new models that will be capable of accessing advanced interactive features such as BonusView and BD-Live.
The BDP-S350 and BDP-S550 models both support BonusView (Picture-in-Picture) featured on some of the new Blu-ray Disc theatrical releases. The BDP-S350 model is BD-Live ready featuring an Ethernet port for an easy firmware update and access to Internet-based interactive content features. BD,s new features
It's difficult to get excited about features I already purchased on my HDDVD player, at one hundred dollars less, months ago. By dragging out the release of these features BD can sustain their high prices and force people to buy a second machine if they were early adopters of either BD or HDDVD.

New Sony BD players
I believe that I read that both of these new models are coming out with BD 1.1 and can be updated to include interactivity features via firmware upgrade. Aside from the sheer silliness of rushing a product to market that is already in need of a firmware upgrade before it ships, this raises the question of BD2.0 compatability. Will these be fully 2.0 compliant after the firmware upgrade?

It isn't difficult for me to get excited about new Blu Ray players with more complete (and upgradeable) featuresets. And I own a Toshiba A35 player. Jeez-people spend $100's of dollars on cell phones (Apple iPhones-Blackberries,), video cards, and all sorts of things.
What I like about Blu Ray is the fact that OPPO and numerous other companies will be in competition for market share in releasing Blu Ray players by the end of the year. I'll use my Sony PS3 until OPPO, Pioneer, or Panasonic (okay--maybe Sony) release Format 2.0 (or 2.1:-) with great scaling and de-interlacing. Great video chipsets are still beneficial to Hi-Def video and movies.
I refuse to piss and moan over things that already happened. And I'm not going to get inferior downloads (unless it is a fave tv show I missed) as a substitute for the best audio codecs and non-lossy video.
As OPPO is releasing their DV-983 on March 10th for $399 and it was given the best reviews of any universal player ever released by "Secrets of Home Theatre", who do complete tests on these items--gave it a score of 100. Better than any SD performance by any HD or Blu Ray or even high end Denon universal player ever released.
This player should be a real shot in the arm for people that don't have great video chipsets in their HDTV's--which is most, except for some of the new Pioneer plasmas.
Sorry for going a bit off-field in the discussion, but it is related, particularly for people that have significant DVD collections (which I do).
Basically, we all spend money on the things we either need or the things that bring us great pleasure and entertainment. I will have no problem waiting until great and reasonably priced Blu Ray players arrive. Again, I won't moan over my Toshiba A35. I'll use it for the HD discs I have and buy some of the ones that are on really great sales.
