Apple(R) today announced iTunes(R) Movie Rentals featuring movies from all the major movie studios including 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Lionsgate and New Line Cinema. I have not found anywhere that verified the source encoding of the movies themselves, but it is well-documented that the Apple TV hardware has a max resolution of 720p. I would therefore expect the movies themselves to be encoded at a max of 720p.
