Plot ... In an incredible twist of fate, a Scottish doctor on a Ugandan medical mission becomes irreversibly entangled with one of the world's most barbaric figures: Idi Amin. Impressed by Dr. Garrigan's brazen attitude in a moment of crisis, the newly self-appointed Ugandan President Amin hand picks him as his personal physician and closest confidante. Though Garrigan is at first flattered and fascinated by his new position, he soon awakens to Amin's savagery -- and his own complicity in it. Horror and betrayal ensue as Garrigan tries to right his wrongs and get out of Uganda alive.
Cast ... Forest Whitaker, Simon McBurney, Gillian Anderson
Thoughts ... While I totally agree that Forest Whitaker was very deserving of his Oscar for his amazing protrayal of Idi Amin, overall I was somewhat disappointed in the screenplay. While I understand that fictional characters are introduced into every "true story", Simon McBurney's character "Dr. Garrigan" seemed to be too involved and to have too much influence on Idi Amin. I was particularly annoyed by the exploitation of certain events that have been proven to have been nothing more than myths. One grusome incident in particular was totally unnecessary. I would have liked to have seen a story that stayed truer to the facts.
So, a mixed review from me ... great performances, but a script that that left me cold. Just my opinion.
