LG BH100 Universal HD DVD/Blu-ray Player

Post by Richard »

One of the biggest complaints with the Blu-ray and HD DVD disc format war is the need to buy separate players for each format. If HD and film is your passion you have a difficult choice because not all movies will be released in both formats. A large portion of the potential "high definition disc" consumers are waiting for one of two things before investing their hard-earned dollars in another format: 1) a clear winner in the format war, or 2) a universal player. When LG unveiled their universal player at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show (CES)...

universal player only helps renters, not buyers

This is a good development, but it really only helps those who only will rent (Netflix!) movies rather than buy. After all, we don't want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a format which may be orpahned in a few years. . .

I watched it this weekend on my LG BH100 & thought the picture was a bit soft. Great movie overall but didn't have that 3-D effect you so often see on DVDs playing @ Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. Even ran King Kong but, again, not the super crisp multi-dimensional image I saw @ Tweeter months ago. I'm running the player thru my Pioneer Elite VSX84TXSi (with Farouja scaler) to my 57" SONY 1080i rear proj. TV. Any thoughts on running the HDMI from the player directly to the TV and bypassing the receiver for video altogether? In fact, some of the images I get from SAT like Amazing Race & Survivor are even better than HD-DVD or Blu-Ray on the new BH100. Any thoughts on the subject?

This performance question is so open ended... Some info would help...

The receiver's scaler should not be in play if the LG is set for an HD scan rate... is it?

If you are using HDMI the receiver should only be passing the signal on through so no advantage using a direct connection to the display.

If you are using component that should not be it either and in that case a direct connection may improve things.

What is the model of your TV?

How is your SAT connected the TV and what scan rate did you set it for?

So you think satellite-delivered Amazing Race and Survivor (both SD programs) provide better picture quality than HD DVD and Blu-ray? Wow!
