Samsung HL-S6188W ??

Hello,

I'm new to HDTVMagazine.com and I look forward to learning at this site.

I've been doing some research and I'm pretty impressed with the Samsung HL-S6188W DLP TV. While there are now bigger displays in this line from "Sammy", the 61" will do just fine for our living room environment.

My questions:

Would you recommend this model? If not which would you recommend?
How does the "Picture in Picture" feature work on this display?
How does the PC hook up look?

I have no intention of buying either HD-DVD or Blu-ray until they get sorted out so that's not a motivation point at this time. In fact, I can't even see HD-DVD anywhere to compare to Blu-ray. (The CC I live near doesn't even have that format in their store?)

I will fly in Microsoft Flight Simulator on this display when I'm not watching HD programming. I wonder how that will work out?

Great TV. Samsungs tend to ISF calibrate the best so far...

It has PIP and I would presume it is as good as any other...

The PC input is nothing more than another input but uses RGBHV VGA instead and is not required for a PC.

I love HD DVD! If you have a full scale home theater you are missing out! As for Bluray the performance sun has yet to shine but the potential is clearly there.

Definitely buy an Oppo at least or any other upscaling SD DVD player...

As for PC bear in mind nearly all displays have some level of overscan and for peak performance you want 1X1 pixel mapping. With this display that means 1080P which also means you need a really good gaming card for peak performance. There is a mode for PC that will put everything on the screen but that destroys the 1X1 pixel mapping - you will note a loss of clarity when comparing.

Remember, if you have the right room, performance front projection can be had these days for $3-5K! You will get a larger image with less overall artifacts.

I read an article praising the Samsung HL-S5687W, but it indicated that you could only set a 1:1 mode while in service mode, which does me no good. It further explained that the 88 series ( i'm assuming the 5688) can be set to 1:1 mode.

My question is.... Is it worth getting the 5688 (includes cabelcard slot) to get the 1:1 mode, but then use a cable set top box to enable all of the cable companies features

That sounds vaguely familiar... asking my colleagues over at the ISF Forum...

The problem with Samsung is they can be a moving target! My HLP has only 5 different firmware numbers and they all do something slightly different to vastly different.

For all I know there may be a solution now from pressing the right buttons to updating firmware or changing a board.
