"The Constant Gardener" is based on the novel by John Le Carre. The writer says in the DVD extras that there may not be one line of dialogue left in the movie that was in the book, but it may be the most authentic movie adaptation. One of the main reasons is that it is filmed in the same places in Kenya that are in the book. The real people of a Kenyan town are in the movie. The scenes are shot very naturally, such that the actors freely move in the scenes ... not having "to hit their marks". It almost has the feeling of a documentary ... but it is pure fiction. The depressing part is that in the back of your mind you are thinking that the movie may have more than a grain of truth.
This is not just a political thriller, but a love story. A love that actually grows after the murder of Justin Quayle's wife (I am not giving much away here as the murder happens very early in the movie ... and is central to what happens for the remainder). Wonderful performances by all the lead actors.
I highly recommend this amazing movie ... definitely deserving the rating as one of the best movies of 2005.
