Samsung DLP RPTV HLPxx63 and HLRxx67 series

note: the xx represents the screen size.

These are killer displays which at minimum can be properly calibrated for an artifact free response of the native scan rate using the HD3 or HD4 TI DLP chips. The HLPxx63 is 720P and the HLRxx67 is 1080P and the current production models for 2005-2006. If your system is setup with an external scaler you are set to go.

Great for medium room applications. There may not be enough punch for bright rooms and poor blacks in dark rooms.

If you intended to use multiple inputs to either of these displays you should check with your ISF calibrator to see what can be done for your system.

Larger screen sizes will have better black levels. Some calibrators can also install a neutral density filter for dark room applications.

excerpted from a working review...

The HLP series is unique in that it can provide all the things your ISF calibrator would be looking for to provide you with an artifact free image. Unfortunately the ability to do that can vary due to three software changes that were made on this series. The first one, 1314, is very limited in scope but if you are using an external scaler all problems can be resolved. The second 1324 clips analog 480I component video inputs so you must use the DVI/HDMI digital video inputs instead. The final, 1326, has complete adjustments for all areas of performance.

The first two firmware releases do not allow the color space to be changed and like many digital displays the green is somewhere between SMPT-C and the old NTSC standard. This means the green is too saturated and also the color decoder cannot be set properly using the standard method of turning off the other two primary colors requiring a color analyzer to check and adjust for the green channel.

The final firmware allows the color space to be changed to what ever standard you desire. While it also provides the ability to adjust other inputs and scan rates the performance of this product with anything less than 480P component video is poor enough that I would recommend an external scaler or 480P DVD recorder for SD sources. For that reason the other firmware versions have little affect on overall performance beyond the color space issue.

It has been brought to my attention that the HLR series is not cooperating with what we need for a proper response and also for a recommendation.

At this time the calibration community has found that we can only get analog component to respond correctly and the HDMI input will not. That is a severe error for a new 1080P display and the HDMI requirement of the new HD video discs.

Will provide any updates as soon as they become available.
