HD Library June/July 2005

As we head into the summer I am reminded daily how television takes a back seat to the summer months! That said things are not completely dead in the world of HD and there are some dramatic changes coming ahead, at least from my perspective.

I am still working on a Waveform Review of a Samsung DLP RPTV. This review is getting so big that it will be broken down into different parts. The reason for this is digital has finally come of age due to two new display technologies. For flat panel applications it is the new generation LCD flat panels and for RPTV applications it is the new generation HD3 and HD4 imaging chips. Both technologies meet a 3 screen height viewing distance without being able to make out pixel structure or picture elements. Both are impervious to burn in. Both are in a position to lead over well known display technologies, plasma and CRT.

When are all manufacturers going to start making their software upgradable? All of the so called "high end" products should have the provision of upgrading firmware. Check out this review on the Oppo dvd player. It's firmware can be upgraded from an internet download burned on a CD. I hope more manufacturers will follow their example. I would love to see displays with firmware versions that give technicians more controls for better calibration. It would be easy to do with USB ports.
