Over the last decade we have seen a proliferation of devices introduced to the market. They are designed to protect your equipment from AC power surges and damage from lightning-generated spikes. They also aid in reducing the noise from the AC power line to improve the response of an audio and or video system. Within the industry the overall benefit of these devices has been questioned with little science being applied by those authors providing the reviews. The manufacturers, on the other hand, via their marketing and advertising departments would lead you to believe that not having such a product is a detriment to your system. The use science to create a specific perception of what their product does rather than prove their claims.
AC power is one of those things we take for granted in our audio and video systems. Since everything else in the house works just fine it is assumed that the AC power is just fine. But the truth, at least in most cases, is that your AC power waveform is likely distorted and providing RF noise into your audio and video system. This condition prevents it from performing to it
