Combining cable and satellite on one RG6 line

Post by akirby »

Reposted from the structured wiring forum:

I know you can get a combiner (or a multi-switch) which will combine OTA signals and sat signals onto one cable. Will this work with cable TV and satellite? I'm thinking not but wasn't sure. My wife started with one cable connection, then changed to satellite when I got my direcTivo and freed up the old receiver. A few weeks ago I picked up a brand new DirecTivo for $99. Now she complains that she can't watch something else while it's recording. (Mind you she's never been able to watch or record more than one show at a time but that's not important right now). I have both cable and satellite but I'm out of satellite connections unless I go to a 8-way MS AND I'd have to run another cable upstairs to get an extra satellite connection (the Tivo has dual tuners).

Will this work? All the combiners I see say VHF/UHF specifically but not CATV so I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks

Allen,
You can do this.

Using a DIPLEXER, you can combine (OTA and Sat) or (Cable and Sat). You can not combine cable and OTA

Terk carries an outdoor diplexer that works nicely. http://www.terk.com/pdfs/BDSP1.pdf

You will need two diplexers. One to combine the signal and one to break it out.

See the "When the cable company is still there" section of the following link.
