If you recall I was very happy with the performance of the Panasonic DVD recorder regardless of the few quirks. My next step was to check out the Phillips DVDR985 to see if I could have it all.

Basics
The recorder uses DVD+R and DVD+RW discs with the DVD+RW similar to the DVD-RAM except you can play this back on another player provided it supports the disc type. Also note that the Phillips uses + formats while the Panasonic uses - formats. Only the JVC XLV721 would play back the DVD+RW disc with the other two refusing to read it. If this is an issue then take one to the store and confirm that another player you are considering will accept it prior to purchase. The Phillips does not support a
