Mitsubishi WS-55809 won't turn on anymore
I have a 2001 Mitsubishi HDTV rear projection model WS55809. While watching it one night, it just turned off by itself. I pushed the power button, the green light came on, and then immediately click off again. No blinking. I did this several times, with the same result. And then, the green light refused to even come on. I checked the fuse located at the entry point of the power cord for continuity, and it is OK. I then pulled the power cord and checked it, and it showed 120 V going through it. I looked at all the circuit boards, and did not see any bulging capacitors. There are also no sounds or lights detected inside the case. Do you have any idea what could be the problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. David

Sorry to be the bearer of Not-Nice-News!
...and, Amateurs, Lay peoples, and Otherwise 'D.I.Y.' yet totally-unqualified could really "DO" themselves a Serious Mischief while 'messing-about' with Any Electronic Innards!!
That Rear Projection Set is well-beyond HOPE! ... Your Company was The Very Last Holdout amongst that technology . . . .it seldom worked satisfactorily for very long then & there essentially is No one now qualified nor interested in 'fixing' it, either.
A brand-new, Up-To-Date HDTV will be cheaper, anyway!
{Just my 2 cents!]

Thanks for your candor, Eli. I will no doubt be trashing it. Or, better yet, someone may want it for parts. ???

.... I REALLY wasn't attempting to pretend being a 'Horses' rear end / derrière, truly!! - - - - The entire 'Phenomena' of Rear Projection Sets became a Wickedly-costly One to all ... The Makers, as well as WE, The Customers!!
- - - NOW, onto a Very Nice, Large Plasma HDTV, if-you-please? ( Already under ~$400 for a 42" Panasonic beginning size!!}
Thanks for understanding and pls do HAVE a great weekend !!!

Thanks again, Eli. One quick question, though. Since it's been many years since I've purchased a TV, I'm not up on the latest technology. What type of TV out there on the market is the best to buy? Plasma, LCD, LED, BlaBlaBla? Thanks

Hi, and I genuinely offer my 'THANKS!'
Re: {What's 'better?'}
A) - No Such Animal as THE SINGLE One, 'Very BEST!' of course!!
B) - 'LED' Variety was absolutely by Advertisement and Marketing Agencies to make it appear as tho an Entirely Brand-new Technology had suddenly-been-invented!! ... NOPE, only another means of Illuminating those 'Zillions' of Pixels and Otherwise, exactly the same LCD as ALWAYS! .... { LCD vs PLASMA }
C) - Many {including the Pros herein} don't LIKE 'PLASMA.' - - - in my opinion, ALL should at the LEAST, explore that Possibility FIRST, when buying another HDTV!!
D) - LOTS of 'Myths!' .... plasma will develop permanent "Burn-in" -{NO!} ... it will drive my electric bills 'sky-hi!!' -{NO!} - plasma MUST be ONLY in an entirely-blackened Viewing TV Room - {NO!}
E) - 100% accurate that ONLY a plasma set will never exhibit 'Blurring' during the passing of a Football ..OR.. the spinning of an Olympic Skater going for her GOLD Metal!! ... all manner of "work-arounds" inside of LCDs to minimize Blurring BUT, plasma never HAD it at all to be dealt-with!! ...( different Technology)
F) - Display-for-Display ..... plasma will cost substantially-LESS than 'LCD.'
G) - ONLY select & choose a SIZE by the measure of the distance from your eyes to that intended Display Panel {while in your normal, seated position} - - - LOTS of 'Guides' & so, google any one of them! "Bigger IS Better!" ... no one ever WISHED that they had bought Smaller!! - - - many have has Buyer's Remorse & wanted LARGER!
Never smaller than ~ 50'' in my opinion ...OR... you simply will NOT be viewing the Immersion of HDTV Effects {NOT to be confused w/ [3D] at all.}
H) - ALL will definitely benefit from a Wall Mounting & External Audio System! ... needs NOT be a Million Dollar sound system, either! Dolby 5.1 can NOT be done with ANY TV Set's Internal Audio!!
LOTS MORE!! .... eli

WOW, thank you so much, Eli. Great info. I can take my time shopping around, since I have a back-up TV to get me by for now. Do you any particular brands you prefer? Any to avoid?

.... YUP, I'm "afraid so!"
YEARS + YEARS ago now {back-in-the-DAY of our Moon Travels} ... it was strictly SONY's LCD Sets! Not NOW, 'cause they are essentially 100% removed from Residential HDTV Set Making! ... LOST literally Billions over past Decade, trying to compete & never made a Profit !! ... now, "leasing-out" that Name ONLY w/ 'zero' of the original engineering staff involved as was the case!!
NOWADAYS, Never anything by 'LG' of course!! HORRIBLE Customer Service, either "IN" or 'OUT' of warranty!! {used to be 'Goldstar' which was also very, very Wicked.}
That only leaves Samsung & Panasonic - - - each Outfit w/ 'basic' {A.K.A. - Price-leader, cheap Sets} AND Premiere Versions, to-be-sure!! .... Unless you might be either College or Pro Football Junkie, seriously consider studying some more? ...Definitely WATCH an entire Game or 'HD' Movie on your Friend's HDTV to get ideas of WHAT & What-not to repeat for yourself!
Recall that your CABLE Set-up MUST be altered drastically!! ... LOTS of different Set Top Boxes, with & w/o various 'HD' Recording Capacities! ... I personally use & enjoy Two (2) separate Cisco 8642 HDC Boxes, in their 500GB Models. { Upstairs & Downstairs thingy!} ... W/ 'COX' these come along with a Premium GUIDE which is very, very User Friendly, in my opinion!! Monthly Billings will INCREASE terribly, too!
Wall Mounts are extremely-cheap on Internet & are absolutely great for removing that Pedestal/Foot/Stand to make a dramatic Presentation in your HDTV Viewing Room! ... MUST have & use room-darkening, lined Draperies and muted ambient / room lamps, of course!

Lest I scare YOU to DEATH .... I personally don't USE Draperies of any sort in my Home! I'm a Widower, so Not-A-Problem with my own Ideas of "Decorating a Room!'
Instead, I've got 'faux' Wooden Blinds of the ~ 2'' slats sort, custom-cut to the exact interior dimensions of each Window! ....In this way, I can make them "disappear" while 100% in their 'Opened Mode' & STILL have an appropriately-darkened Viewing Room for BRITE daytime 'HD' Programming!!
Consider using COSTCO for an additional year Warranty, issued by THEM ... OR, a {premium} C.C. which does the same thing! .... Otherwise, SAMsCLUB has a great (3) years Extra-cost Plan, assuming that YOU might be a "worrisome Sort?"
Not-A-Thing wrong w/ [ http://www.amazon.com ] as long as YOU demand their 'White Glove Del'y!'
...Questions??? ... ask anytime at all. {"HDTV" is sort of a continuing Education!!}
