I am getting a TV for my father-in-law. Looking for 37" up to 42" inch. I see that Best Buy is selling the Westinghouse CW40T6DW for $319 this week.
It has 3 HDMI and 1 component video, and 1 VGA in, plus digital audio out. I don't see him using more than 2 HDMI inputs, and the digital out he made use to go to an older receiver.
Does anyone have this 40" set or have they seen it? Since we will mount it too the wall, I don't want the inputs being hard to get to. With 3 HDMI inputs, I would expect that 2 are on the back and one on the side, like a lot of other TV's.
Doesn't need something super-high quality -- I think this will fit the bill for him.
Should I wait until Thanksgiving -- that is, does anyone think a 40 inch would be cheaper that $319 on Black Friday?
While these bargains brands (Westinghouse, Polaroid, Coby, Haier etc.) are cheap, they have generally not had great reliability and the picture quality is often mediocre at best. They also do not have any service network and are essentially unrepairable if anything goes wrong with them. If you are willing to consider such a set a throwaway item if something goes wrong, then buy it.
The smarter approach, IMO, would be to spend a little more on a decent name-brand TV (Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Sharp, Toshiba) which provides decent warranty and repair service. The only bargain brand to consider might be Vizio since they have some semblance of a service network and have improved their quality. Reliability is still spotty for Vizio sets, though. You should be able to get a much better quality set for around $50 or so more.

JazzGuyy,
Thanks for the advice. Glad to see that Toshiba is on your good list as there is a that i am considering. I own a 42 inch Samsung from two years back, so i can speak to their quality.
Additionally, you might peruse the local COSTCO Outlet ... They offer an additional (1) year Warranty @ N/C and 100% refund for most of their Brand Name Sets, as well as "No Questions Asked on Returns!!"
.... worth their annual charge of Membership, especially w/ Holiday Shopping Season nearing!
