HDTV and Home Theater Podcast - Podcast #518: Cord Cutting – A Financial Analysis

Post by arad »

Cord cutting has been in the news quite a bit lately. A week doesn’t go by when we don’t receive an email from a listener telling us about how they have cut the cord and couldn’t be happier. Every email prompts us to consider a life without cable bills but inevitably there is something that keeps us from taking the plunge. A recent email from Van in Odenton Maryland got us thinking. Could we combine OTA with a Tivo Box and iTunes and a AppleTV and essentially eliminate our Pay TV bill altogether? For this paper study we will use Ara’s TV usage as the base.

Your solution to cord cutting includes a good analysis of an alternate system to reach much of the content available online. We have already set up our system to include Apple TV, a DVR, and have the Blu-Ray players with Smart TV so we can get Hulu and Vudu, and a host of other choices. This can be another part of the solution via the fast-developing area of the "Smart TV" interface available on newer HD TVs and Blu Ray players. We have found that iTunes doesn't have all of the new release movies and most of these can be found on Vudu (or other providers) in the rental or purchase option. We've also noticed that the Smart TV choices are expanding week by week. The cord we do use is a wired connection to either our Apple TV or the Blu Ray players that in our household works much better than the wireless connection.
