Best Settings for SDTV Signal

Post by albusd »

Greetings from a new member:

I just bought a Toshiba 46G310U, replacing a Sony 46-in Bravia that was stolen after 18 mos, and could use some advice about picture optimization.

First, the HD channels on Dish Network look great, if a bit too bright (using factory settings - I probably need to change those), but at least some of the SD channels look very poor, fuzzy & grainy, much worse than I recall from the Sony. The prime example was a FoxSports baseball game in SD - it was so bad I turned it off. An old standard CRT looked much better. (I haven't had time to watch a Blu-Ray disk yet.)

What can I do to improve the SD picture quality, if anything?

I run Blue Jeans top quality HDMI cable from the satellite receiver (HD Solo DVR VIP612 model) to an Onkyo HT-RC160, then to the TV. I've made no changes to the settings on the satellite receiver. I do run two old CRTs off the coax in other rooms and don't want to mess them up if I change anything on the sat receiver, BTW.

I'm open to advice about calibration of the Toshiba, but the expense of a professional calibration would be overkill. Maybe the Spears & Muncil Blu-Ray disk would be a good compromise?

Perhaps someone here owns that Toshiba and can recommend better-than-factory settings. (I've searched online and found nothing so far.)

Thanks for any assistance.
