Are moviegoers are losing interest in 3D…again?

Think gasoline. Think rising food prices due to rising gasoline prices and the general decline in the purchasing power of the dollar in general. 3D is an expensive novelty and right now, people are focusing on the necessities; eating, working and the getting to/from those locations. If a movie is in the budget, it'll likely be 2D rather than 3D due to the extra $3-$5 for 3D. If the studios can't figure that out, they've got their heads in the clouds...

Nanook, I think this is likely the best explanation. The only thing I'd disagree with you on is where they've got their heads.

It's beginning to look like what happened in the 1950s is happening again. 3D became immensely popular in the theaters then but within a couple of years, the public decided that the novelty wasn't worth it and that they didn't care to wear glasses to watch a movie. With a couple of years 3D was essentially gone and many movies that had been made in 3D never even had a 3D release but were only released in 2D. Time will tell if history will repeat but I think it will.

One of the problems I see from experience is that for the most part today's 3D movies don't really add much to the movie. In the old days things would jump out of the screen at you and make you duck. It was interactive and fun. Now days all it really does is make things a little more realistic. I like seeing things in IMAX more than 3D.

3D isn't going anywhere. With a nearly 500% increase (estimated) in 3D sets being sold in the next couple of years, content will be needed. The problem is the slap-dash conversion being applied to movies that don't benefit from it (CLASH OF THE TITANS, THOR, etc.)

The problem is 3D stinks. Once you see it you can live w/o it.

All four of us get nauseous from it, after a half hour. That's due to differing myopia prescriptions in each eye.
