Samsung LCD P2570HD - poor DTV reception compared to convertor

Post by jswilke »

Why does new Samsung P2570HD LCD TV pull in fewer channels and exhibit more pixelation than the old anlog CRT TV (equipped with digital converter box) it replaced using the same antenna set up? It seems the cheap converter box digital tuner is superior to the tuner in the new Samsung?

Just might be that it isn't as good. I suggest contacting Samsung and see if there is a firmware upgrade for this problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, Richard. I had an online chat with Samsung and they advised me no downloads are available and there are no reported issues with digital tuner for my model. They suggested I go to fine tuning menu and manually fine tune channels I am having problems with (I thought manual fine tuning was only for anolog not digital). I'll try that if I can, but I expect I will be returning the Samsung LCD to try another brand.

Meanwhile for grins I inserted the old digital converter box between existing antenna and new Samsung set up for channel 4. I regained the lost channels.

Hello jswilke ....

Just for "kicks" - - DO return it before your (7- 14) days limitation kicks in and try out another Brand ... I have a few HDTVs within the home { upstairs / downstairs thing } and are 'forever' using my Outside Antenna during times when I already have the HD Cable Box too busy recording the two opposing Broadcasts!

P.S. - - and, DO get a larger display, too, please? .... very same $$$, or , even LESS !

Eli,

Return/exchange will not be a problem...purchased the Samsung at Costco.

While I appreciate your advice to go bigger the new LCD is the third HDTV in the household located in a spare small bedroom (replaced old analog CRT) where it will get very little use. Our main TV viewing is in the family room equipped with a 58" Panny Plasma and full home theater surround sound system (OTA & DirecTV). We speak HDTV in our household and have since the early days of high definition...love it.

With all the the information out there regarding picture quality for different HDTV types, brands and models I am kind of surprised there is nothing out there regarding relative digital tuner performance for same. Heck, there was even lots of info floating around on DirecTV HD tuner performance as new OTA capability evolved in earlier DirecTV DVRs. My very first HDTV (50" Fujitsu plasma) did not even have a tuner.

I am both surprised and annoyed the new Samsung LCD could not pull in all the same local Sacramento area channels that I was able to view with the old analog CRT (with cheap digital converter box) using the exact same antenna connection. Clearly all digital tuners are not created equal.

jswilke (back) ...

JIM - - - Great ! {that it can be returned with no problems, I meant!}

I've helped locally as a "geek Volunteer" with folks switching from their original CRT sets ... to that end, I have had very good results w/ OTA-HD reception (outside antenna only, by-the-way) on Sony's 32" XBR6 ....

Might consider that as an alternative?

Although there are none today, this "listing" changes nearly each Midnight .... here's that XBR9 for approx "Half price" @ $599 - BUT - it MUST be only considered "IF" their (5) years 100% Plan is also acquired simultaneously @ $99 ... so, not any Barn Burning price, obviously!= http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/sto ... 1665746304
