Sony LCD RP KF42WE610 - blue blotches

Post by film11 »

I'd like to know the answer to this as well. My 42" Sony Wega also has the "blue blotches>" I don't think it is the bulb.

I am pretty sure that the "blue blotches" are the result of a manufacturing defect. Search for in on the net and you should find lots of information.

Problem wasn't always there, so can't be sure it's a mfg defect. Anyway, couldn't find any info on it.

All MD technology, except DLP, requires cooling of the light path in the optical block, more commonly referred to as the light engine. Most are filtered to prevent teeny dust bunnies from getting in this area. Unfortunately the filter is typically difficult to access so cleaning and replacement requires in depth service. On top of that it is difficult if not impossible to determine how often your filter may need cleaning since that varies from one house to another. I have seen filters stuffed and melting optics within the 1 year warranty period! Needless to say this is never done, consumers are not aware of it and nor are most service centers. Quite understandable since no manufacturer brings this up in the service manuals.

If you have a calibration disc you can put up a full white field. If you see areas of red, green or blue color, that polarizer has begun melting due to lack of air flow to cool it. Due to how much of the other spectrum the polarizer is blocking blue is the most common, followed by red and then green.

Sorry to tell you this will be expensive and requires replacement of the light engine. Being a 42" display, the price will be difficult to justify.

WE42610 is the model.

Thanks Richard. I did have a tech look at it, thinking irt just needed a cleaning. He was unfamil, iar wirth the issue, but said it was a panel problem and that the panel would have to be replaced. Your info makes more sense.
