Sony LCD RP KDF60XS955 - blue blotch in picture

Post by ffraikor »

I have a 60" Sony Grand Wega purchased back in Feb.2005.
Currently there is a "blue shadow" in the lower right hand side of the screen and it is beginning to creep along the bottom. Also there are a few blue pixel stars beginning to show on the black screen. The lamp was replaced under warranty by a service rep a couple of years ago and I did check to see that the lamp is screwed in properly, etc.

I have been told that this is not a lamp alignment problem but a failing "engine" chip and that a repair, if possible is very expensive. In which case I probably should replace the TV with a modern LCD or Plasma in the 55 or 58 range for about the same price.

I have also been told by an electronics store sales person that there is a "class action" lawsuit on this particular problem with Sony rear projection LCD HDTV's. ??

I called Sony Service and they merely gave me the numbers of local repair shops.

Has anyone else encountered this and/or heard about the lawsuit?

Hello ffraikor -

You plus very many folks that unfortunately bought these rear projection sets - - - from ANY maker, by-the-way - - - are pretty much out-of-luck at this very late date .... That was long ago!

ALL makers have stopped offering this type [rear projection] of HD television, save (1) last hold-out currently!

Your "hope" of anything constructive via the Class Action is mis-placed or simply "jousting-at-windmills", I firmly believe ... FAR, FAR too old ... at the maximum, it amounted {back then} to an extended warranty interval - NOT a new TV !

Just save up as you posted ... explore a very nice 58" - 60" plasma set, by Panasonic or Samsung, instead.

p.s. - - - MANY buyers experienced 100% failure long before you did .... perhaps you didn't "log" the operating hours on your set? In any case, absolutely NEVER worth repair cost!

This is a known bug with that series Wega. I have had it happen twice in 4 years. A friend of mine twice also, and a 2nd friend 3 times. Sony did lose a court case about it. All that happened was Sonyhad to extend the warranty 2 years and keep fixing it for the people that were part of the lawsuit. I was not part of it, as I didn't hear about it until it was over. So you are out of luck also. It is a bad design and will happen every 1 to 2 years repeatedly. My 3rd party warranty company refused to renew my warranty a second time ROFL. Have you ever heard of a warranty company not accepting money to extend a warranty? They know this series is a lemon. So, we are all out of luck. A simple Google search will bring up all kinds of data about the court case, about unhappy owners, and even about a guy that devised a couple fans and some dryer ducting to try to prevent or delay the optical engine from going out. It's basically a cooling problem.

ffraikor,

Welcome to the site!

Everything you have stated pretty much encapsulates the problem. Sony is not the only manufacturer to have this type of problem and some have covered the part with the customer paying the labor. While there is no official recall you still might be able to get assistance. To move forward on that will require you have the purchase receipt and have a Sony authorized service center come out to inspect the product and give you an estimate. At that point call Sony and let them know how you really feel and hope they will be inclined to grease your squeaky wheel. for their consideration you will likely be required to fax them the sales receipt and estimate.

Thanks to Richard, Tony and Everett for the replies and information. It looks as if I'll be giving myself a Christmas present of a Samsung or Panasonic plasma TV !!!

Thanks again,

hi again ffraikor . . .

"IF" there is a membership for either SAMsClub or COSTCO's available - - there IS either a Samsung's 58" model {under $2,000} .. or .. a very good 54" Panasonic for $1,299 ...

PLUS ... in a very short time, there are going to be great "desperation" promotions during both Halloween as well as the traditional "Black Friday!"
