Panasonic DMP-BD55 blu ray player

Post by mpholic_2 »

Anyone have one of these?

My two oldest sons bought me one for Christmas. I knew they were thinking about getting me a blu ray for Christmas but I had no idea which one and to be honest I wasn't sure how the different models compared since I wasn't quite ready to buy one myself I hadn't done any research. My downstairs HDTV is a Mits 55" RP with no HDMI (1080i) and my receiver is old enough it does not decode Dolby TrueHD or DTS MasterHD.

One of my sons went on to explain to me the reason they bought this particular one was so I wouln't have to update my reciever right away. It has 7.1 analong outputs and my receiver has 7.1 analog inputs. The player does all the decoding and outputs the audio as analog. In my situation this is a real plus. I wondered how difference I would hear between DD5.1 and all the new formats (TrueHD DTS Master and PCM). I can't believe how good it sounds (sorry I am not a true audiophile so I am at a loss for words to descride it). It sounds so much more full and rich and alive.

While it may be some time before I can upgrade my television I am definitely looking forward to getting a 1080P set.

Your sons did good. I have this player, and am also using the analogs for audio. It does look and sound great. CNET reviews gave it's sister, the BD35 (no audio analog outs), it's Editors Choice award last year. They are excellent all around performers, and you probably can't do better for the money. Enjoy.
