HDMI Denon AVR-588 =No Audio?

Post by thepix »

Not sure what I'm doing wrong? HDMI is connect via HDMI1 port on the 52LG50 HDTV to the monitor port on the Denon AVR-588(HDMI 1.3a) receiver. HDMI is connected from AppleTV to the (DVD or CBL) Denon. I get video and audio on the 52LG50 TV's speakers but not via the Denon. :( Not sure if this is important but along with the DVD or CBL source indicator the Denon shows analogue on front panel. When I connect using component/optical the sound functions fine on the Denon. The HDMI cables were purchases recently but are not certified. I would appreciate any suggestions regarding this issue.

Cheers,
Danny

First, I doubt very much there is a problem with the cables. Sounds like you need to recheck in the Denon menu/setup what inputs it is using for your signal sources. It may be set to a default of something besides HDMI. Do you have the analog red and white RCA plugs connected for audio? You really don't need those and I would get them out so things are less confusing.

You say you are using DVD or CBL for the Apple TV. Those are two different inputs. You should maybe hook from your Apple TV to the TV/CBL input (HDMI 2) on the Denon. Then in the Denon setup menu, select TV/CBL (HDMI 2) as the default input.

Thanks for the reply Dave. I only have 2 HDMI cables plugged into my entire setup -not including speaker cables. I assume that there is no other setting for the audio as the manual keeps going on about HDMI video and audio on the same cable. I am getting HDMI (from the AppleTV) video and audio through the TV fine.

Cheers,
Danny

So which is the new equipment you are trying to hook up, the AppleTV or the Denon. Is there anything else you could hook to the Denon, like a DVD player, to check the connections/settings that way?

The 52"LG (52LG50) HDTV is new. My DVD is component but I did alternate 2x AppleTVs with same results. I have been using the Denon AVR-588 with component (purchased 6 months ago) hooked up to a 32" LG HDTV.

Using button ten on lower right side of the remote, the input mode button, is the Denon set to "auto"?

How do you set up auto mode? The manual mentioned this but there is no indication of how to go about it.

You just press and release the input mode button while watching the display on the Denon. It should cycle with each press through other modes. Keep pressing until auto comes up.

According to page 10 of the owner's manual (that thing that nobody reads) - the Denon AVR-588 does not support audio through the HDMI input. It only supports the video portion. That's probably why it has a MSRP of only $350. Sorry!

Clarification - it passes the audio through to the monitor but does not decode it or play it.
