Although the information isn't as solid as if 30 Helens agreed, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich believes the PS3 is going to keep increasing its sales and that Microsoft will announce a price cut for the Xbox 360 at E3. He foresees the PS3 gaining momentum and claims Metal Gear Solid 4 will actually have a greater impact on the console's ...

Good news about the price drop ... but it doesn't take a genious (or an analyst) to figure out that PS3 will continue to outpace Xbox 360. It's all about market penetration, and the PS3 has more potential that Xbox 360.

But even so, this says nothing about the PS3's success (or lack thereof). How about some meaningful comparisons to the 360 ... like how well each penetrated the sector over thier first 18 months?

PS3 needs to knock $100 off the price and start releasing some good games.

I should disclaim that I am a 360 owner. I owned an original Xbox as well as a PS2. But until Sony releases games on the PS3 that I can't get on the 360 ... I'm not wasting my money.

PS: Since this story is comparing PS3 to Xbox 360, it should be filed under Gaming, not Blu-ray!

The ONLY meaningful comparison between two pieces of hardware is how well each is currently selling. Past performance doesn't pay future bills.

I keep seeing these stories about PS3 outselling Xbox 360, but in reality, there are absolutely no gamers that I know of that would even consider buying a PS3. They all think that it is a joke!

Maybe there a lot of folks buying them for the Blu-Ray movie-playing capability, but certainly not for games (at least not in the US).

I suppose all of those folks buying PS3 games are using them as frisbees? The games are taking longer to develop and have not caught up to PS2 levels for sure, but I assure you people are buying them and using them as game consoles. The release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (only available on PS3) is probably a large contributor to the increase in sales. I bought a PS3 just for GT5P - although I would have eventually bought one anyway.

PS3 sure changes purpose a lot...

It's funny how the PS3 was purely a gaming console during the HD DVD/Blu-ray battle. People didn't buy them to play movies on! You can't take those numbers to mean that Blu-ray was outselling HD DVD for hardware players!

Now that the battle is essentially over and the PS3 continues to gain market share as newer games are released, it is a "joke" for a gaming platform and people only buy them to play Blu-ray movies on!

The truth is that the PS3 was always a good gaming platform but suffered from not much available software (games). That and the higher price from including the Blu-ray player has kept volumes down since it's introduction. However, there were a lot of sales for the purpose of Blu-ray playback and there is a pretty hard core group that loves the platform for gaming.

I have two sons who are big time gamers. The oldest bought a PS3 as soon as it was released and the youngest bought an Xbox 360 as soon as he was able to. Both love their platforms and wouldn't have anything to do with the other platform. Some folks like Chevys some like Fords...

Why don't we just accept that the PS3 is a pretty versatile offering and whether or not you like the games on it is a matter of personal taste. The market is what it is and the PS3 is gaining market share very slowly. It isn't the huge instant success that I'm sure Sony hoped for, but it certainly played a significant role in helping Blu-ray displace HD DVD, which like the Xbox 360 had a pretty significant head start in the market place.

I don't own either platform personally, so don't take this as an endorsement for the PS3, I just get tired of folks who keep painting the picture with the colors they like that day to support their skewed viewpoint. Both offer outstanding visual performance in gaming and the Xbox 360 clearly has an advantage currently in available game titles. If the PS2 is any indication of future PS3 game selection, it is only going to be a matter of time before the PS3 catches up and exceeds the Xbox 360 in that area. By that time we may indeed have a next generation Xbox that will blow away the PS3, but until that happens let's not throw any more dirt on the PS3 "coffin".

My biggest interest in either was to interface with my HDTV. Both offer interesting potential in that area, but neither are perfect. The thing that led me to lean toward purchasing the PS3 was it's Blu-ray capability and the thing that made me lean towards the Xbox was the Media Extender function it offered. I've been dissappointed in the Vista Media Center lack of native support for EITHER HD format and I've been very impressed with the continual improvement of the PS3 through firmware updates. In this regard I'm still leaning towards the PS3 to add to my HDTV experience. I haven't purchased either due to personal circumstances that has me moving and building a new home, but I will most definately buy some sort of Blu-ray player late this summer/early fall when I move into the new house. Since the demise of HD DVD, it likely will be either a PS3 or a standalone Blu-ray player. The Xbox 360 doesn't offer as much in this regard IMO. The best I could hope for is adding a Blu-ray player to my Vista HTPC and using the Xbox 360 as the extender to my HDTV, but my experience so far trying to use Vista for video playback has been problematic. There are a couple of restrictions on the PS3 that also make it less than ideal from the standpoint of a Blu-ray player, so I'll likely go with a stand alone Blu-ray play when the Live version players hit the market soon.
