Is the Vizio M3D651SV too big for me??

Post by cetrax »

Hello,
I currently have a 47" hd tv. I am looking to upgrade to a bigger, passive 3d set. I can't seem to find any passive 60" 3d sets.

I have found the passive 3d, Vizio M3D651SV. But is 65" too big?
I personally think bigger is better. Lol.

I will be sitting 7 to 10 feet from the tv.
Will 65" be too big for that viewing distance?

Thanks for any and all help guys!
Have a great day..

Only if you find yourself turning your head to follow the action. Otherwise, no.

I use the distance calculator.
Can anyone tell me what these results mean.
The screen size is 65" and my optimal viewing distance is 8ft

Distance to main viewing location: feet 8
2. Choose Screen Shape: 4:3 (Standard TV Shape) 16:9 (Widescreen TV Shape)
3. Choose Screen Size: (Enter either a diagonal screen size or width):
65 Choose Diagonal Size = inches
or Width = inches

RESULTS:
deg.
Current Viewing angle 32.9
Feet
Maximum recommended viewing distance 24.5
Feet
8.8 Maximum recommended SMPTE viewing distance (30 degree viewing angle)
Feet
10.2 Maximum THX viewing distance (26 degree viewing angle)
Feet
7.3 Recommended THX viewing distance (36 degree viewing angle)
Screen size to achieve SMPTE minimum viewing angle
51.4 " wide
= " 4:3 diagonal or " 16:9 diagonal 59
Screen size to achieve THX recommended viewing angle
62.4 " wide
= " 4:3 diagonal or " 16:9 diagonal 71.6
Viewing Distances Based on Visual Acuity
Feet 22.7
Maximum Viewing Distance for NTSC/PAL(720x480/720x576)
Feet 8.5
Maximum Viewing Distance for HDTV(Fully resolved 1080i; 1920 x 1080)

Put simply, your viewing distance should be 2x the diagonal (assuming a 16:9 screen ratio). So a 65" set is best viewed from about 11 feet.

Feet
8.8 Maximum recommended SMPTE viewing distance (30 degree viewing angle)
Feet
10.2 Maximum THX viewing distance (26 degree viewing angle)
Feet
7.3 Recommended THX viewing distance

By the THX standard and the SMPTE standard your viewing distance for visually seeing maximum resolution should be 7.3 to 10.2 feet. Another way to use the calculator is to just put in your screen size and it will tell you the ideal max and min viewing distances for THX and SMPTE standards.

All details aside, I have yet to hear anyone complain about a TV being too big, and almost always wishing they had bought bigger.

A 65" in a typical bathroom or kitchen might be a bit much - especially if it blocks a doorway. But a 65 if it finds a space in virtually any other room will be quickly appreciated.

Thanks so much for the help.

I will be purchasing the Vizio M3D651SV 3d tv. I have a small living room.
I sit about 8-9 ft from the tv.
I watch mostly hd and sd dvd movies.

The thing I worry about is will that be too close for sd videos.
I play my dvd's through Sony BDP-S590 3D player.

What do you guys think and does anybody have any opinions or experience with the tv I am thinking of purchasing?

Another one of my off the cuff answers: SD is never good enough after getting used to HD, especially off of disc. Just be sure you have a Blu-Ray with as good an upconverter as you can find. I have liked Oppo's performance and the 103 is getting great reviews, but it is $500+ (Oppo has a lot to offer overall). Other's on this forum may have other recommendations.

My other casual answer for SD, is drink another beer relax to the experience. At some point there are things that just can not be made as good as we would like. So sit back and enjoy the movie, after all our brains will connect to a good story and fill in the imagery for us.
