LG 65LM6200 vs. Panny P65ST50

Post by kennnyli »

Hi,

I'm looking for a new TV to be placed in the living room (somewhat controllable lighting) replacing a 46" LED Samsung. Currently I have narrowed it down to two options:

-LG 65LM6200 (65" LG LED 3D TV)
-Panasonic P65ST50 (65" Panny 3D Plasma)

Which one is the best value in your opinion? Any other recommended TVs? I would like to watch 3D movies as well; which has better 3D performance?

My budget is around $2k which is the lowest I can get those two TVs for.

TVs mostly used to watch sports, TV shows and news.

Also, when is the best time to purchase? Now? Or the supposedly cheaper times in February?

THANKS!!!

Hello, kennnyli !

Not all might agree, certainly BUT, It might have already passed-you-by? .....obviously referring ti "Black Friday's" barrage of Internet Promotions verses standing-in-line @ Midnight!

Are you 100% sure that you really MUST get 3D ??? ... that actually became The Biggest Turkey yet offered by the Industry! ...not that much Commercial Programing available (excluding your Sports, admittedly) and, now, the latest "PUSH" is to convince us all that we MUST have "ultra-hi-def next !!!

AND, a new "PLAYER" as well as the cost for your own 3D Movies won't be "Cheap-at-all !"

'LG' makes but a tiny % of the total Plasma Sets sold, be they Standard or 3D .... I'd stay w/ the Panasonic!!

eli - p.s. added = "somewhat controlled ambient Lighting" NOPE - not GOOD Enough! S/b "absolutely-controlled!" Via lined, full-length Draperies / faux Wooden Blinds etc, etc.!! .... Either an appropriate HDTV Viewing Room ..or.. a Fancy L.R. for Social Entertaining of Guests ... not BOTH!!

I am not so sure that the 3D is such a costly option. Costco has a Sony 3D for $80 with Wifi built in. If you wait the discs come down to $15 (Fry's - probably Amazon since they match). Or buy used.

A problem might be if you use an AV receiver for HDMI switching - only the Oppo has two HDMI outputs (that I know of) so you can go around the receiver. Or just manually swap the cable.

I say this because if you are one of those people who tolerate 3D (~30% don't), and you like the effect (when done well it is pretty cool), then why not? To me, Avatar and Tron Legacy were just great examples. Just because it did not take off in the market is not a reason to not participate. The mindless mob is not the determinant, and Ultra HD is REALLY expensive so far - and there is NO media for it.

I will agree with the light control, I the day time I pull my double layer curtains closed for the windows directly behind me and if I really want to get the mood down, I pull all of them. But I have a west facing wall of windows - it's a brutal challenge in late afternoons.

BTW, Panasonic gets the best reviews, but I have bought three LG plasmas for my kids and all have held up well and were well adjusted by default. (not calibrated of course, but little adjustment was need using a BR calibration disc).

As I said to another poster,

If you can control the light on your viewing environment and appreciate image quality plasma is the way to go, and within plasma Panasonic is on top and then Samsung, but that means to accept 3D active shutter, which some people do not, health wise or due to glasses cost.

Panasonic has received the best consistent reviews on the ST and VT series and the GT series in between will be replaced by a single ST series in 2013 a few months from now, so this may be the best time to get a 2012 model on sale, which is exactly what I did with a GT earlier this year.

I just saw the new Panasonic 60 line models at CES and they are excellent, the new top of the line will be now ZT, then VT, then ST.

If you only accept passive 3D the only way is LCD/LED but then you have to accept its constraints of image quality, half resolution 3D per eye, and limited angle of view.

Unless you are very into 3D I would not select a set based on that feature that most people seldom use, but if you are very interested in 3D you should test both active-shutter and passive well in order to determine if either has weaknesses that may be a deal breaker for your case, such as half resolution per eye of passive, possible visual discomfort with active shutter although is 1080p per eye, cost of multiple sets of glasses (more expensive with active shutter), angle of view limitations of LCD/LED just because you like passive 3D (not an issue in plasma but plasma is active shutter), etc.

Best Regards,
