HDTV Almanac - Panasonic Dozen-Foot Diagonal Display

Post by alfredpoor »

Once again, Panasonic has move the goalposts in the “Mine Is Bigger than Yours” contest. The latest is a 145-inch diagonal plasma television; that’s more than 12 feet from corner to corner. According to a news report by Tech-On, the behemoth was a joint effort with NHK (Japan Broadcasting System) and was produced in one [...]

Alfred...

Thanks! That really gave me a good chuckle as I contemplated it.

Of course, the statement is not entirely accurate. What he actually said was that such close proximity would allow an experience of "realistic sensations". I.e., it would not be an appropriate distance for viewing a movie, but rather for feeling as if you were IN the movie!

> So I don’t want to hear any more complaints when I recommend a bigger screen for your viewing distance <

Not from me. Wall size screens, that fill an entire wall of the room, will be really cool. Followed by multiple walls. Followed by the Holodeck. <grin> Sitting down to breakfast, looking out the window from Mount Everest. Having lunch looking out over the canopy of the Amazonian jungles. And dinner gazing across the Egyptian desert at the pyramids. All with live, real-time ultra HD feeds.

For now, I will content myself with watching movies at ~1.1-1.2x the screen width. E.g., an 8' screen from 9-10 feet.

Not to be overly flip....but I live in LA, we should all consider sitting at least one screen height away from the screen - just in case it comes down in an earth quake. (Add a few inched for bouncing and flying glass.) Of course we can toss that when OLED is common - they will be so light as to only do minor head damage. That actually works out to a close and immersive but probably reasonable distance to not have to move the head to scan the picture.

This does sound like a very interesting TV though. I recently was going to convert to a projector. Then I found the limitations of a non dedicated Theater Room - with windows, the mechanics involved, and the need for casual vs. Movie TV to be fairly steep, even if doable. Wife factor - I'm on my third and need to keep this one. And then I come to find there is a promise (wishful thinking?) of an 80" Sharp Elite on the horizon. I think the rationally sized Elite will do a more complete and direct job. Of course teasers like this Panny are going to kill me...teaser in the sense that even if they made it, it would be crazy expensive for home use. (For Rudolfo, I am the only one in my family that cares about quality, I will be sitting dead center - I have heard your message on LCD.)
