With many devices you don't even need the shades. Just try to read the display on your smart phone in direct sunlight or even bright shade. It's as blank as it is when wearing polarized glasses. At least the one I have behaves that way.

Imagine flying an airplane with the new "glass panels" on a very bright day. You need sunglasses to see outside, but you can't wear polarized glasses as those displays that guide you through the sky while keeping from trying to share space with some one else are blank So you have to wear plain sunglasses which may or may not be the answer for your phone, tablet, or what ever as some are just blank in bright light with our without glasses.
