Ethernet over HDMI

Post by jamesj »

I am starting to see HDMI cables in the stores that are labeled "High Speed With Ethernet". The guy in the shop said "soon their will be TVs with an Ethernet connection, which will pass this connection over to connected devices via the HDMI cable". He didn't know when these TVs would be available. Does anybody know when we will start to see devices that take advantage of this HDMI 1.4 feature?

Thanks .... James (in Australia)

Scroll down a bit, within that coverage of "HDMI' to where the sentence begins re: ".. second meaningful specification change ... 1.4 HDMI ..."

... perhaps it's the same as that puzzle "..which came first, the egg or chicken..?" meaning, with those appropriate HDMI cables available, surely they must "know" that the Gear can't be far from Market!! ... One "bet" says in time for next Turkey Black Friday ??

HDMI LLC established a new policy for manufacturers of any product with an HDMI feature to stop using the version number (such as 1.3, 1.4, etc) and rather indicate the actual features of the spec that the product implemented, such as the Ethernet capabilities you have interest on.

A product claiming 1.4 does not necessarily means that it implements all the features of 1.4. A wire needs to have a 4th twisted pair for the Ethernet feature, a receiver must indicate on the back connector a label such as HEC or HEAC.

The label could only be on one of the HDMI ports/connectors, but the switching capablity of an AV Receiver would most probably extend the feature to all the HDMI inputs/outputs to allow all the connected components to share the feature (if they individually support it as well), which must be active even when the AV Receiver is not ON.

I suggest for you to check the specs of the product you want to buy to look for the presence of proper labels.
