There’s been a lot of activity on the Internet recently around the new HDBaseT Alliance. Bottom line, they want to replace HDMI with standard Cat5e or Cat6 cables. The group was launched in December 2009, but recently announced that LG Electronics, Samsung and Sony have thrown in their support. This, along with a finalized spec, have moved the HDBaseT idea to the forefront of home theater news.

"We only wish this would have come along years ago, so we could have skipped the HDMI phase altogether."

A similar solution that predated HDMI has long existed. It's called IEEE 1394 (FireWire/i.Link). It does everything described herein except that the power delivery was not at that high a level. I remember attending CES around a decade ago where Sony demonstrated a television, a receiver, a DVD, and a VCR all connected via i.Link. Around that same time, I could plug a my Panasonic D-VHS unit into my Sony HDTV via FireWire and it worked just fine. There's even a standard for FireWire over Cat 5e cabling.
