HDTV Almanac - PC to HDTV via USB

Post by alfredpoor »

Okay, I just used my entire quota of acronyms in the title, and I haven’t even started the entry. But this is pretty clever news. Gefen has created a “USB DVI Adapter” — oops, more acronyms — that lets you connect a computer to an HDTV. And it only uses a standard USB port. The [...]

EVGA has actually had a product like this out for a long time. I think I bought one nearly 2 years ago to add a secondary monitor to my corporate desktop. Never tried it with a DVI>HDMI adapter, but no reason why it wouldn't work, I guess.

I used the UV16 without issues...video framerate wasn't quite 30 fps, but I think that may be fixed by the UV19.

Thanks!

Thanks for that information, Tim. And EVGA's even costs less.

Guess which company -- EVGA or Gefen -- has me on their press release distribution list?

HDCP?

Post by stevekaden »

I see no mention of HDCP?....so I will assume that this will not be able to transmit a Blu-Ray movie.

Negatory on the HDCP

Post by alfredpoor »

You're right, Steve; the Web site doesn't mention HDCP support. To make sure, I just called Gefen and was told that the device does not support HDCP (though the technician said they hadn't tested it, which was slightly puzzling). I'm a little surprised because Gefen is all about high-end products and solving problems like slow HDCP handshaking when switching HDMI sources. But apparently this is not intended for turning your PC into a DVD or Blu-ray player. (Makes me want to get hold of one and play with it in the back room a bit to see what it really can and can't do.... <g>)
