It’s getaway day here in Seattle for me, but as always, it has been a packed week at the Society for Information Display (SID) annual conference. There were no earth-shaking developments for the HDTV market revealed here, but I want to recap the overall themes based on what I saw and heard here.

Well, that may be. I'm sceptical though. First, 3D, at least so far, is at best an incremental 'improvement' over well produced and mastered 2D. It is by no means the game changer that adding sound was back in the late 20s. That change actually contributed to the narrative potential of film. 3D does not drive the narrative. It does add a sense of envelopment when very well done (ie Avatar), but at the same time a greater sense of isolation. Those may be pluses or minuses depending on the program and viewer.

I'm no luddite. I like my music in surround when possible, stereo when not. However, I will certainly listen to and enjoy a great performance of great music coming out of a single 2 inch speaker. Similarly, some black/white, academy format films pack more emotional wallop for me than any 3D extravaganza so far. For me, the fundamental content is paramount, and how that content is presented much less important.

So...where's the content???
