A new report by Leichtman Research Group indicates that nearly half of U.S. households have at least one HDTV. The 46% level of HDTV penetration is roughly double what it was two years ago. The fact that prices have fallen more than 20% a year for the past two years doesn’t hurt either.

hd tv sold
The bottom figure says it all. 14% still think they are watching hidef without the service . Personally, sales numbers without the coressponding numbers of settop boxes sold to go with the tv is not that meaningful to others than the manufactuers.
We need informed customers who understand that buying hd tv without the box is a nice video monitor & 42" is a designers choice.

hd without a box
If you are to get Hd over OTa,Fibre optic service or Qtuner that can descamble or effective cable card or or legal Full hd streaming or just watch Blu Ray , then you do not need a set top box.
