Re: Surround Sound Analogy

Post by alfredpoor »

The only difference between the surround sound and 3D is that if you'd had to wear headphones in the theater to hear the surround sound, you might be more likely to accept wearing headphones at home. It's not a perfect analogy, because headphones are isolating, and the 3D glasses are at worst a nuisance but you can still wear them when doing something other than watching 3D TV and it won't impact your vision significantly.

I'll check out Sony's interactive TV; thanks!

your artificially intelligent partner that not only understands where your body is in 3D space but is able to interact using voice recognition and speech synthesis.
I saw a youtube video of this for gaming 2 weeks ago using the Xbox 360 as the platform... no mention of Sony...

You may be right, Richard. I saw the demo on my PS3 (in HD of course) downloaded from the Sony gaming network. The demo was hosted by Sony, but, as I remember, I think it was in collaboration with Microsoft who gave the technology briefing.

It's called Project Natal (pronounced nay-tall), apparently named as such because it's a "rebirth" of gaming.

It was unveiled by Microsoft/Xbox 360 at the E3 gaming expo a few months ago. Here's a link for more information on everything that was covered:

Combining that with 3D displays could be quite interesting ... I'm dubbing it "non-virtual reality" ... you heard it here first! ;-)

Enjoy,

"Rebirth" is probably not much of a exaggeration. It's a much more intimate connection than simply viewing something in HD. I've done work in the field of artificial intelligence and, assuming this wasn't a rigged demo, I was very impressed. The possible applications, from games to an AI helpmate, are staggering. Of course, this much power also opens up the possibility of unforeseen problems. Open the pod bay door, HAL.
