Hi " ttus " ...
Broadcasting signals in "VHF" has NOT stopped whatever!
You are confusing / intermingling .. analog Vs Digital .. which has naught to do w/ VHF vs UHF !!
The very largest TV Markets - in fact - STILL use VHF - i.e. - NYC from the Empire State Building and greater Chicago, to name (2).
One should always go to :
www.antennaweb.org as their number 1 step .....
Input just your ZIP, click onto 'continue' , check 'digital' BUT omit ALL that other.
Listed WILL be those TV Stations in your Market, Their VHF or UHF {or both!} usage, Compass Direction for each Station & other assorted "goodies."
Whenever BOTH Bands ... one must have / use a "combo" Outside Antenna System - - - one such unit that "works for many" is a Channel Master # 5646.

Yup! They're still there...But
Yes the VHF channels are still there, but there has been a lot of channel swapping so your channel 6 or what ever may be some where else (IE a different channel).
The previous post has a good link, but...fill in all the blanks. I did it just using the zip and ended up with a lot of wrong distances. Channel 19 from Mt Pleasant was over 40 miles instead of less than 20. It listed some channels as being fringe or out of range when they were only 40 miles away. When I put my address in it listed them correctly.
