Not necessarily automatic
The email I received from Netflix stated only those who wish their DVDs sent in Blu-ray format will be assessed the added one dollar monthly charge. If you do not want the extra charge you will need to switch back to regular DVDs. Others who want to continue their DVDs in a non-Blu-ray will not have do anything to avoid the extra charge.
