Respectfully Bobby, how is it then that every satellite receiver box or OTA receiver box as well as most currently available integrated tuner HDTVs allow for aspect ratio control of these 16x9 transmissions with black sidebars? It is apparently quite easy to do adn I still maintain that Mits could have easily provided a means to avoid the issue.

I just double checked and the new DirecTV receivers do not allow stretching or cropping of 16:9 HD sources. At least not in my setup (HR20-700 outputting 1080i only to a 55" Mits Diamond CRT via component video). It goes through the various format names (pillarbox, stretch, crop) but doesn't actually change the picture.

Perhaps HDMI is different.
