DLP® Products from Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE:TXN), today at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) set a new benchmark in HDTV brightness due to advancements in Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). DLP technology has now doubled the brightness of previous LED models and reached levels that exceed that of the competing full HD plasma. These brightness advancements can be expected in future product lines from leading DLP HDTV manufacturers and a prototype can be experienced in the DLP products booth at CES (Central Hall, Booth #8205).

Interesting...Additional system changes to the LEDs were accomplished by working in close partnership with the leading LED maker, Luminous. The enhancements will enable wider angle screens to be incorporated by set manufacturers in future models.
I think this is marketing lingo for the removal of the fresnel screen, a standard used with RPTV for nearly 2 decades that focuses the light into a narrow beam for more light output. That is why brightness changes at off angles... With all the light they are getting out of the LED system appears they can finally dispose of it along with making rear projection more competitive with flat panels for this facet of performance.
