Mitsubishi 2006-2007 DLP RP - supports 1080p?

Post by rog5878 »

After waiting an eternity, it sounds like you got the
best resolution (minus the long wait). With a new DLP,
I assume that you can connect a Blu-ray or HD DVD 1080p directly through your HDMI. My understanding is that the 2006 models only allow a max of 1080i.

My light engine (knock on wood) is not only still working
well but the picture is incredible -- much better than before.
I have been using settings from the current (2008) Mitsubishi settings posted on AVS forum. The settings are definitely different than the ones posted for the 2006 Mit models. Also, I have borrowed a friend's Toshiba A20 (?) HD DVD (he now also has an A35) and his HD digital video essentials disc and made some further, subtle adjustments - but even better picture.

I would be in hog heaven if the hdmi input accepted a 1080p signal.

Thinking about getting an HD or Blu-ray player (The Panasonic DMP-BD30K 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player looks like a pretty good player but I don't believe that the signal through HDMI includes 1080i, only 1080p; would have to use component and not going there; also there may be some questions about sd dvd upconversion quality.)

Sorry for the detour.
Once again, Congratulations Sheldon.
Be sure to tell us what you think of the new picture.

OK, I'll contribute to the hi-jacking of the thread (just for a bit) since this topic interests me and I've had more than one heated discussion w/ friends, family and colleagues on this same subject.

I have a Blu-Ray player (specifically a Sony PS3) - It supports both 1080i and 1080p playback as does my '06 WD73732 via HDMI (at least when I switch to the player for Blu-Ray movies the TV will indicate it's showing in 1080p format for those which state that as their native format and shows 1080i for others).

Your post seems to indicate that you want both i and p formats supported via HDMI. Although I'm not sure why you would WANT 1080i specifically since 1080p is theoretically better, I think you'd be hard pressed to actually see the difference from 8 feet away anyway.

For those not "in the know": Progressive-scan formats (i.e., 480p, 720p, and 1080p) convey all of the lines of resolution sequentially in a single pass, which makes for a smoother, cleaner image, especially with sports and other motion-intensive content versus the "i" or interlaced formats where the sources get "painted" on the screen sequentially: the odd-numbered lines of resolution appear on the screen first, followed by the even-numbered lines - within 1/30 of a second.

As for a player - I would suggest (now more than ever) that you go with a Blu-Ray player since just yesterday ( 01/05/08 ) Warner Brothers announced that they had settled on backing and using Blu-Ray exclusively. With Warner on board, Blu-Ray now has about 70 percent of the market locked up.

While HD DVD is certainly not dead (yet) it seems with Warner backing Blu-Ray it's only a matter of time before the HD DVD standard goes the way of BetaMax along w/ its support and the content available for such.

Anyway, just my 2 cents. Now lets get get to back light issue problems!

Sorry for the brief hi-jack; one more comment.

Question: I have the same Mit -- '06 WD73732. Does your posting mean that that the '06 Mit will accept a 1080p HDMI feed from a Blu-Ray player?

I didn't think that it would but maybe I should give it a try and see.

My TV indicates 1080p when I watch my PS3 as well.
