LCD outselling plasma

Post by artguy03 »

It shouldn't surprise anybody that LCD outsells plasma by three to one in the HD sales arena. Greater efficienty in the production and technical enhancements in LCD, as well as the sheer number of competitive brands, will by themselves drive down costs and increase competition. Even more important is the obvious visual superiority of the LCD experience. I learned very early on to discriminate LCD from plasma across the length of the TV department at BestBuy due to their sharper picture, brighter colors and superior contrast. Plasma looks a lot like traditional TV, scan lines, blurry image and all, and it runs much hotter than LCD. Why anyone would choose plasma at all continues to baffle me. Of course, I assume that those who have already invested in plasma will rush to differ with me.

LCD VS PLASMA

Post by varcieri »

You're right - I'm rushing to differ with you. After much research, I decided on a plasma as it fit my VIEWING ANGLES and was the best picture in relation to how far away I sit from the TV and the lighting in the room. Perhaps LCD outsells plasma because the "average joe" doesn't take the time to do the research on pros & cons of plasma vs lcd for their particular viewing situation. And, I'm sure the lower prices are attractive to the average Joe, also.

People are nuts! The most popular size is 32"; to see 720p you have to sit within 7 1/2'; to see 1080p you have to sit within 4 1/2'. They will pay extra money to get 1080p; then sit 10' away where they can't even come close to seeing 720p resolution--they're nuts!

LCD or plasma..again

Post by artguy03 »

You may rush to differ, but the sales figures are pretty clear. Last August plasma was behind LCD in sales of 32" sets and below, while plasma led with models 50" and larger. Now, LCD leads in all areas and plasma production has slowed. I visited a number of retailers in my city (pop.100,000) yesterday who all agreed that 'plasma is on its way out'. There may be minor differences in viewing angles, etc. but the prevailing view is that LCD is more or less superior to the perceptions of most consumers, and all you have to do is look at it to know that it's true. The most expensive plasma sets lag behind even the middle-priced LCD models in contrast, black levels and brightness. Period.
