Yes there are those cinaplexes out there that don't take the time to keep their film paths clean and calibrated. Case in point the Crowne Theaters in Annapolis MD, I've never seen so much film judder on stationary credits in my life. But for the most part the projection of 35mm has been a very enjoyable experience.
I agree a dedicated light controller Home theater can be a truly remarkable experience with a well calibrated 8 or 9" FPTV CRT however nothing beats the contrast ratios of film based projection !
